A new image from We Live in Time has sowed confusion across the Internet. Executive produced by Benedict Cumberbatch and directed by Brooklyn‘s John Crowley, the movie is an A24 romantic dramedy starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield. The ensemble cast of the upcoming We Live in Time also includes Wicked: Part One‘s Adam James, The Watch‘s Marama Corlett, Normal People‘s Aoife Hinds, Gran Turismo‘s Nikhil Parmar, Torchwood‘s Heather Craney, and artist Kara Lynch.
On X, Film Crave shared a new first-look image from We Live in Time showing Flornce Pugh and Andrew Garfield smiling while riding a carousel. While the image looks like a normal romantic photo at first, a glance at the lower foreground reveals a strange-looking carousel horse that looks more like a hand puppet or a character out of BoJack Horseman. What Is Going On With This We Live In Time Image?
Is The Horse Supposed To Look Like That?
It is difficult to determine to what degree the horse’s presence in the new image is meant to evoke the tone of the movie. Because it is not based on any pre-existing source material, the We Live in Time trailer is so far the only hint that exists as far as the movie’s overall subject matter and approach. Considering the fact that it is a dramedy about a couple seemingly facing a potentially fatal diagnosis, the presence of the goofy carousel horse in this image does not necessarily feel like an organic part of the narrative.
However, there are many more lighthearted moments in the trailer that use an off-kilter comic tone, particularly the couple’s unusual meet-cute where Pugh’s Almut hits Garfield’s Tobias with her car. Therefore, the presence of an unusual carousel horse may fit in perfectly with that side of the dual tones of the upcoming A24 movie. In fact, it might even be commented upon within the scene and form a core memory for their relationship.
[A24] is not afraid to bring the unusual to the screen.
We Live in Time embracing a more off-kilter approach would also be in keeping with many of the dramas put out by A24 in recent years. From the bizarre Nicolas Cage movie Dream Scenario to the surrealist nightmare Beau is Afraid to the maximalist multiverse of Everything Everywhere All At Once, the company is not afraid to bring the unusual to the screen. It remains to be seen if the horse fits into that milieu, but for the time being, it at least seems to have helped the movie capture fans’ attention.
