Diego Luna, who plays Cassian Andor, teased that the upcoming Andor season 2 would explain why one character from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was so important to the Rebel Alliance. Andor season 2 has been one of the most highly anticipated upcoming Star Wars shows for years. As the show gets futher into development, more details are being made public. Luna has already teased that Andor season 2 would change Rogue One and other Star Wars movies, and his latest comment suggested that one character in particular will be a highlight of the series.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Luna said that Andor season 2 would explain the backstories of several Rogue One characters, particularly the security droid K-2SO.
“You’re going to see why K-2 is so important in Rogue One, and how does he get to be such an important character for the Rebellion.”
K-2SO was one of the central figures of Rogue One, as he was one of the first characters to join Cassian and Jyn Erso’s mission to find Galen Erso. K-2SO was a breakout character in Rogue One because of his blunt way of speaking, his friendship with Cassian, and Alan Tudyk’s performance. Fans have long speculated that K-2 would appear in Andor season 2, and Luna’s comments seem to confirm that he won’t just appear, he’ll be one of the show’s main focuses.

K-2SO’s Backstory Has Long Since Been Anticipated
K-2SO’s backstory was only briefly hinted at in Rogue One, and the idea of learning about his origin story has been one of the most exciting things about Andor. Rogue One also implied that K-2 and Cassian had a very lengthy history together, though the timing of the movie limited how much of that it could show. Unfortunately, the ending of Rogue One also limited how many times he could appear in Star Wars stories. Knowing K-2SO’s ultimate fate hasn’t deterred fans from wanting to know more about him, though, and now Star Wars is finally going to answer those wishes.
Andor could finally fulfill Star Wars fans’ wishes to see more of Cassian and K-2 on-screen.
Cassian’s story has obviously been fleshed out in Andor, but his history with K-2 has already been seen before in Star Wars. The comic “Rogue One – Cassian & K-2SO Special 1” detailed how the two met, and how Cassian reprogrammed K-2’s Imperial protocols. It’s not clear if Andor season 2 will directly adapt that comic and moment in Cassian and K-2’s relationship, but it will undoubtedly reveal some of the misadventures they got into before Rogue One. If it does, Andor could finally fulfill Star Wars fans’ wishes to see more of Cassian and K-2 on-screen.

On top of featuring Cassian and K-2SO’s relationship, Andor season 2 has promised to explain why K-2 was so important to the Rebellion. It’s not clear exactly how the show will make him such a central figure, and it likely won’t be until the season is actually released. That being said, it seems safe to assume that he’ll be able to prove himself in a very dramatic mission with Cassian. Andor season 2 is already shaping up to be something truly special, not least of all because of how it could recontextualize Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and add to K-2SO’s character.
