Until Dawn Director Shares Exciting & Bloody Filming Update For Acclaimed Horror Video Game Adaptation

Director David F. Sandberg has shared a major production update on Until Dawn. The upcoming horror movie is an adaptation of the PlayStation video game of the same name, an interactive survival horror game following a group of young people partying at a mountain lodge who are menaced by a mysterious figure with murderous intent. The Until Dawn movie, which is being directed by Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman (It, It: Chapter Two), stars Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Odessa A’zion, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare.

On his official Instagram account, David F. Sandberg shared an image of what seems to be a window drenched in blood, with three smiling faces reflected behind the red splatter, two of whom are Sandberg and Lotta Losten, a producer on the movie who is Sandberg’s frequent collaborator and wife. In front, a hand holds a slate announcing Take 3 of Scene 88A was being filmed on October 4, 2024. The caption of the image, which reads, “We made it until dawn! The Movie Is One Step Closer To Release

Now that Until Dawn has officially wrapped principal photography, the post-production process can begin for the adaptation of the iconic horror video game. While the movie does not yet have an official release date scheduled, precedent shows that it will most likely be ready to premiere by the end of 2025. Below, see the timeline between the production wraps and the premiere dates of similar gory R-rated movies that have come out in the past few years:

Post-production times have varied for comparable titles, generally ranging between six months to a year. However, it seems possible based on their averages that Until Dawn could premiere as early as July 2025. This means that it will most likely join the roster of 2025 horror movies, which already includes The Wolf Man, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Saw XI, and 28 Years Later.

The Movie Could Be Ready For The Perfect Release Date

Even if it may be ready to hit screens sooner, Until Dawn wrapping in early October sets the movie up perfectly for a release in October 2025, allowing it to take advantage of the increased interest in the horror genre that is generally sparked in the lead-up to Halloween. So far, the only major horror release scheduled for that month is the Blumhouse sequel The Black Phone 2, so the movie could thrive with minimal competition from other entries in the genre.
