After enjoying critical success, Transformers One director Josh Cooley is hinting at a trilogy. As a prequel to the entire Transformers franchise, the movie explores the friendship between Optimus Prime (Chris Hemsworth) and Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry) and how it shattered. It even reveals how a group of overlooked robots became capable of transforming. It has enjoyed strong reviews, securing an 88% Tomatometer score and a 98% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.
In an interview with The Wrap, Cooley explained that he hopes to see the movie expand into a trilogy. After years of exploring the Autobots and Decepticons on Earth, Cooley wants to consider what brought the warring robots to Earth. He plans to eventually depict the war that destroyed Cybertron, showcasing everything that Optimus Prime faced before he took his fight to Earth. Check out his full quote below:
There’s definitely more story to tell. We’re used to seeing the story begin once the planet’s dying and they leave for Earth, so there’s a whole war that happens once they break apart and once they leave the planet. So there’s a lot more story to tell there and it could be really fun.
Cooley Fleshed Out The Narrative Of The Transformers One Trilogy
As the movie only released on September 20, the Transformers One sequel has not yet been confirmed, let alone the threequel. Paramount will need to consider the box office results, which are currently not on track to achieve substantial success. Against the latest Transformers‘ $75 million budget, it is expected to earn just $26 million this weekend. To achieve success, it will need to make $150 million. That total is unlikely, unless positive word-of-mouth can draw audiences in its second week. Streaming could provide an alternate path to success, but that would be months away from realization.
The reality of Cybertron’s collapse has never truly been shown in the depth it deserves.
Still, Cooley’s comments are important for fleshing out the potential direction of the franchise. The reality of Cybertron’s collapse has never truly been shown in the depth it deserves. The wars that brought the robots to Earth are fascinating, and they are a much-overlooked piece of the narrative. It has been the entire driving force of the franchise, but it would simply be too expensive to depict in full. Cooley’s remarks reflect his ambition and provide a road map for the future of the franchise, after Megatron promised that the story was not over.
Our Take On The Transformers One Trilogy
Animating The Trilogy Was A Genius Move
The cost of depicting the fall of Cybertron would be immense in live-action movies, making a full-scale depiction improbable. In animation, that is not quite the issue it would otherwise be. Animation can slash that budget, allowing for a faithful depiction of the wars that destroyed the home world. It also allows for a detailed exploration of Megatron’s slow descent after Transformers One‘s tragic post-credits scene. If the prequel can find enough traction, Cooley has already defined the franchise’s future and intends to cover a previously unadapted narrative.
