“Tim Didn’t Tell Me”: Michael Keaton Didn’t Know About The Beetlejuice 2 Cameo

Michael Keaton has revealed that he didn’t know anything about a particular Beetlejuice Beetlejuice cameo, which surprised him while watching it for the first time. The latest entry in the horror-comedy franchise includes a storyline where the titular Betelgeuse (Keaton) is trying to escape the wrath of his ex-wife, Delores (Monica Bellucci), who puts her chopped-up body back together at the start of the film. Aside from her, the new cast of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice also includes a cameo from Danny DeVito, who portrays an afterlife janitor whose soul gets eaten by the new antagonist.

Speaking with Forbes about his upcoming movie Goodrich, Keaton revealed that director Tim Burton never told him anything about DeVito’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice cameo, surprising him the first time he watched the movie. The actor explained how he didn’t recognize him immediately, but after a minute or so of watching him onscreen, it finally clicked for him who it was. Check out what Keaton had to say below:

I didn’t know he was in Beetlejuice [Beetlejuice]. Tim didn’t tell me that and I was watching an early cut of it and I see and go, ‘Wait a minute!’ You can’t recognize him right away, and then you can barely recognize him and then from another other angle, I realized it was him.

He’s a really, really nice man, Danny. I really like him a lot—really sweet dude.

It’s not shocking to discover Keaton didn’t know about DeVito’s involvement in the comedy until he saw the movie, given the number of storylines involved throughout the film. Alongside Betelgeuse’s attempt to escape his wife, the film also sees Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) trying to rescue her daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), from the afterlife, using the titular character’s help in doing so. Eventually, the stories and characters all converge during Beetlejuice Beetlejuice‘s ending, but with plenty of surprises along the way.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice contains a major flashback scene that shows Betelgeuse when he was alive, revealing one key detail about his character.

Because Keaton didn’t know about DeVito’s cameo, it’s possible actors part of different storylines across various parts of the movie weren’t fully aware of every little detail of the film. Because so many characters have their own plots going on at the same time, the real buildup and convergence likely didn’t come until the whole movie was finally put together. However, it’s clear the comedian’s cameo was still one of the biggest surprises, even if there were plenty of twists throughout Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
