“There Have Been Conversations”: The Crow 2024 Sequel Plans Get Interesting Update From Director

With the first film having finally made it to theaters after years of development hell, director Rupert Sanders weighs in on a possible sequel to The Crow. Bill Skarsgård leads the reimagining of James O’Barr’s beloved graphic novel about a musician and his girlfriend who are murdered, with the former being resurrected and using his powers of invulnerability to get revenge. Prior to the movie’s release, Skarsgård indicated that The Crow‘s ending was changed in order to leave the door open for a potential sequel, a claim Sanders has since refuted and assured it to be a definitive conclusion.

Now, during a recent interview with Variety in honor of the movie’s release, Sanders was asked about the chances of a sequel to The Crow. Though remaining committed to the belief of the reimagining’s story being complete, the director acknowledged there “have been conversations” with the studio about a potential follow-up, but admitted to feeling he is creatively spent on the universe for the time being, but remains open should the conversations continue. It’s a hard one because it was such a love story between two people. There’s a lot of things that I had devised and thought about that were ideas within some of the drafts of the script, or some of the elements that I was putting together that were kind of cool, but felt like they weren’t ready yet. As far as his journey was, I love the idea of being able to move like Nightcrawler between the other world and this world, and how pulling people between, and the increased power of one side or the other — It’s fascinating.

There have been conversations about it, and my mind at the moment is a bit of a … I’ve given all I can creatively. But I’m sure a couple of weeks sitting around doing nothing after the film’s been off my radar for a bit, I’ll start to get the itch and start thinking, “Maybe it could be…” But we’ll see. If we’re lucky enough to have those conversations, it would be great. And I’m sure that collectively the team behind this could deliver something incredible for the next chapter.

How The Crow Leaves The Door Open For A Sequel

While Skarsgård may have once held concerns about the movie’s finale being changed to leave the door open for a sequel, The Crow‘s ending is pretty definitive when it comes to Eric’s story. After having a moment of doubt of his love for Shelly, Eric is told he can never be reunited with her, and he instead offers to trade his soul for Shelly’s to escape Hell. At the end of his mission, she is not only saved from Hell, but resurrected on Earth while he dies and is left in the afterlife.

Despite largely closing the door to Eric’s story, there are a few routes a Crow sequel could take. One of the first is the fact that the movie ends with Skarsgård’s protagonist walking off into the misty afterlife plane, making it possible that he is still a wandering spirit that could be resurrected again in the future. Though he may not have a mission of vengeance left to enact, his love for Shelly may still be enough for him to find a way to come back to life.

Shelly’s resurrection in the movie’s ending may also provide a path for The Crow sequel to get made. Should she be unaware of the nature of Eric’s resurrection in the reimagining, she may seek out Kronos for more information, which could, in turn, either present her an opportunity to find a way to bring the love of her life back, or embrace the powers of the crow herself for a new mission. However, with The Crow‘s reviews proving to be largely negative, the movie will need to become a box office hit before any proper sequel talks can get underway.
