The shocking Alien: Romulus ending may have been intended to drive fear into the hearts of its viewers, but the Internet has countered with dazzling memes. It is the ninth movie in the franchise and represents a return to practical effects, extreme horror, and the premise of the lone group of warriors attempting to survive against a Xenomorph. While the majority of the movie features blood and gore, the complete Alien: Romulus ending features a new Xenomorph hybrid, a blood-curdling pregnancy, and multiple deaths.

Practical Effects And Horrifying Concepts Are The Root Of Its Success

As the Twitter users attest, the third act has been the root of many of Alien: Romulus‘ heavily-praising reviews. The movie features heavy stakes that see five of its seven main cast members die, and the final act offers many of those deaths. The most horrifying comes after Kay unintentionally gives birth to the Xenomorph hybrid. The dying Kay has her own child suck the blood from her body, and that alone is enough to create a memorable third act.

The practical effects are what make it so impactful. Instead of relying on CGI, as previous movies have, director Fede Álvarez chose to utilize practical elements as much as possible. It led to the development of an animatronic Xenomorph, which allows for more realistic reactions from the actors. The entire cast is left interacting with a life-sized Xenomorph, making every action feel more blood-curdling. The fast pace similarly affords horror, as characters race through the final act with little opportunity for the audience to stop to breathe.

The realism of the horror also certainly plays a role. Instead of characters joining forces to battle the Xenomorphs, they face difficult choices along the way. Rook is left to battle with his Prime Directive to protect the experimentation program, Andy has to wrestle with protecting Rain, and Rain chooses to value the synthetic Andy over her own safety. The human element ensures that every death or instance of survival has weight. While the movie does often feature gore, it relies on relationships to make that bloodshed meaningful. Alien: Romulus was effective, as the audience has had nothing but praise.
