Pedro Pascal’s Gladiator 2 BTS Photos Highlights Massive Practical Sets & Fight Rehearsal With Paul Mescal

Pedro Pascal shares a massive new Gladiator II
behind-the-scenes photo drop, providing a look at the sequel’s huge practical sets and fight rehearsal. Directed by Ridley Scott and serving as a follow-up to his 2000 epic, the upcoming film features Paul Mescal in the starring role as Lucius, following the character as he becomes a fighter in the Colosseum. Pascals plays a new Gladiator 2 character named Marcus Acacius, a Roman general who serves as an antagonist in the story.

Ahead of Gladiator 2‘s wide theatrical release, Pascal takes to Instagram to share a new batch of behind-the-scenes photos from his time on the movie’s Moroccan set. One of the photos shows off a massive war ship set in the desert, while another shows Pascal within the castle-like walls of what is made to look like an Ancient Roman fortress.

One of the videos included in the carousel features Pascal and Mescal wearing street clothes and practicing a sword battle. Various other images show Pascal and his costars, including May Calamawy, relaxing and enjoying the Moroccan landscape together in their off-time. Check out Pascal’s post below:

What Pascal’s BTS Post Means For Gladiator 2

Ridley Scott Went All-In On Practical Sets

A common complaint levied at many movies today is the lack of practical sets and effects. Often, green screen will be used in place of traveling to a real location because it’s easier and cheaper, but the end result never looks as convincing. Gladiator 2 having been shot on real locations with massive sets means that Scott’s sequel will hopefully avoid any complaints that it looks cheap, underwhelming, or inauthentic.

Pedro Pascal’s Gladiator 2 Character Is The Dark Copy Of Russell Crowe’s Maximus

Gladiator 2 is finally here, and Pedro Pascal’s character is mightily similar to Russell Crowe’s iconic Maximus, but with a far darker twist.

Though Pascal’s post provides a limited look at the practical sets used for the sequel, Gladiator 2 set photos released several months ago show that Scott essentially built an entire Roman city in Malta, including his own take on the Colosseum. Gladiator 2 reviews released thus far are generally positive, and the heavy emphasis on practicality could be part of why. It is important to note, however, that VFX and CGI will still play a large role in the film, particularly in certain wide shots and sequences involving animals like the rhino and baboons seen in the trailer.

Our Take On Pascal’s Role In Gladiator 2

Pascal Is Set To Ascend To Greater Heights As A Movie Star

Pascal has become one of the most recognizable and in-demand actors working in Hollywood today after playing starring roles in The Last of Us and The Mandalorian. He typically plays more heroic characters – and is set to play his biggest hero yet in The Fantastic Four: First Steps – but it will be interesting to see him taking on an antagonistic figure. The behind-the-scenes photos, however, suggest that many of the cast members got along swimmingly off-camera.

A key dynamic in the original Gladiator was the rivalry between Maximus (Russell Crowe) and Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). It will obviously be a major challenge for Mescal and Pascal to capture this same magic, but early signs are promising that Gladiator 2 will deliver.
