Original Boondock Saints Director Predicts When Third Movie Will Release (Without Him)

Troy Duffy predicts when The Boondock Saints 3 will be released without his involvement. Duffy wrote and directed the first two films following the Irish-Catholic twin brothers who become vigilantes and clean up Boston’s criminal underworld in the name of God. Initially a critical and commercial failure, the first film became a cult classic and was followed by a sequel, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day in 2009, which was a modest success. Now, The Boondock Saints 3 is in development with Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus reprising their roles.

During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for the first film’s 25th anniversary, Troy Duffy predicted when The Boondock Saints 3 would be released. The original writer and director, who sold the rights to Thunder Road Films, says production is expected to begin in March 2026, end in August, and the third movie should be released in theaters by the end of 2026 or early 2027. Read his full comments below:

Three’s coming. I basically sold everything to Thunder Road. These guys are basically the action franchise kings of Hollywood, [with] John Wick and Sicario, which I love. I love Sicario.

They’re looking at production starting in March, August of ’26. So the boys should be in theaters end of [that] year, beginning of the next. ’26, ’27, that is.

It Finally Has A Plan For Production & A Theatrical Release

After many years in development, Troy Duffy’s comments reveal that The Boondock Saints 3 finally has a plan for production and a theatrical release. However, the original director is no longer involved, as he has sold the rights to Thunder Road Films, the same studio behind big action franchises like John Wick and Sicario. Much remains unknown about the third movie, including who will take over for Duffy as director. The film has also been described as a “reimagining” of the franchise and will also include the “indoctrination” of new “Saints.”

The Boondock Saints Review

This movie took a half-baked idea and executed it so poorly that the end result is almost unwatchable. This is a cinematic disaster.

Though Duffy won’t be involved in The Boondock Saints 3, the original director is continuing the story in a series of books. Starting with Boondock Saints: Blood Origin, the series will explore the characters of Connor and Murphy in a modern-day setting, delving into their experiences as they arrive in Boston and confront America’s societal injustices. The series promises to provide deeper insights into the brothers’ motives, their journey into vigilantism, and other unanswered questions from the films.

The Boondock Saints 3’s release window is great news for fans of the cult classic film and its sequel. With Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus not only reprising their roles, but also acting as executive producers, the third film should deliver all the vigilante action that audiences expect. However, without Troy Duffy’s involvement, the franchise has an opportunity to evolve under fresh creative direction, breathing new life into the series and perhaps even shifting its critical reception.
