With the Halloween season on the horizon, Netflix has unveiled that Scream 2022 will arrive on the platform in October. The sequel to Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s hit 1996 slasher made its big screen return after 11 years as a new Ghostface stalked and terrorized a new generation of teens in Woodsboro. With new additions to the franchise and some familiar original actors, Scream 2022 helped usher in a new era for the franchise, with a 2023 sequel and a currently in-development Scream 7.
While the Scream franchise’s future is hard to anticipate, What’s on Netflix reported on X that the fifth film in the franchise is returning to Netflix in time for the spookiest season. Starring Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Courtenay Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell, the legacy sequel saw two sisters with close ties to Woodsboro’s darkest chapter become new targets for the violent killer. Scream 2022 will arrive on Netflix on October 11.
Scream 2022 Is A Perfect Modern Horror Revival
The 2022 Sequel Is A Loyal Update To The Series’ Core Elements.
Scream 2022 stands as one of the best examples of a legacy sequel to a beloved franchise, balancing loyalty to its source material’s narrative and values with accessibility for newcomers. The movie is loyal to Craven and Williamson’s goals to create a slasher for a hyper-aware, genre-savvy audience by commenting on the state of the horror genre while also turning its lens to the trend of “requels” and toxic fandom. As such, it upholds the core aspects that helped the original feature stand out.
Scream 2022′s Cast Welcomed New Generation Of Leads
However, Their Future Remains Unknown At This Time Following Recent Exits.
Furthermore, Scream 2022 introduced audiences to a new generation that could help take the franchise forward. Alongside Barrera and Ortega’s Carpenter sisters Sam and Tara, the sequel also featured the introduction of Jasmin Savoy-Brown and Mason Gooding’s Mindy and Chad, the niece and nephew of Jamie Kennedy’s original movie character Randy. Though their future is uncertain following Barrera’s firing from Scream 7, the cast created a beloved group of characters who could pick up the mantle of the original surviving characters. Campbell will return for the seventh installment after skipping Scream 6 due to pay reasons.
Ortega is currently not expected to return for Scream 7 due to filming conflicts, while Savoy-Brown and Gooding’s involvement remains rumored but uncertain.
Scream 2022 was both a successful revitalization for existing fans and a perfect entry point for newcomers. The sequel respected the returning Scream cast while firmly establishing its newcomers in a well-balanced thrill ride. As such, while audiences may be preparing to binge the series for the Halloween series, or curious users may be hoping to dive in for the first time, Scream 2022 is a perfect start to Netflix’s spooky season offerings.
