New Captain Rex art, officially released by Star Wars, all but confirms that one of the most popular fan theories from Return of the Jedi can now be considered a true retcon. As the honorable, loyal, and strong right-hand man of Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano during the Clone Wars, Rex has become not only a fan-favorite Star Wars character, but also one of Star Wars’ very best characters. His appearance later on in life mirrors that of the character Nik Sant, who appears at the Battle of Endor – causing many to hope this character could be retconned as Rex.
Now, Marc Sumerak’s Star Wars: The Secrets of the Clone Troopers (via Star Wars Holocron) has seemingly confirmed that this long-time fan theory can truly be considered an official retcon. Art of Rex in The Secrets of the Clone Troopers sees him dressed exactly like Nik Sant is in Return of the Jedi, with only the slight adjustment of Rex’s iconic 501st blue-painted gauntlets marking a difference between this iteration of Rex and the Nik Sant character. This is said to be Rex’s appearance at the Battle of Endor, only further confirming this retcon is official.

This bold move from Star Wars to essentially confirm the Captain Rex Return of the Jedi retcon means that this long-time fan theory is finally coming true, and that the Nik Sant character is now something of Star Wars Legends. It’s important to note that even Lucasfilm’s own Dave Filoni has been a supporter of Return of the Jedi‘s Rex theory, but he still refused to confirm whether that was true or not. Now, however, with Star Wars making bold and broad strokes to seemingly confirm this retcon, it’s possible that Filoni’s future stories will make this explicitly clear.

This Could Indicate A New Chapter In Rex’s Story
Above all else, this retcon is extremely exciting news for any Star Wars enthusiast. Captain Rex is a fantastic and beloved character, and he truly does deserve to become a part of Return of the Jedi‘s legacy, especially after all the years he spent fighting both for the Republic and against the Empire. It makes sense that Rex would be present at such a battle, especially after the way he recommits to the Rebel Alliance in the animated Star Wars Rebels series. This will easily become one of Star Wars’ best retcons.

A key figure among the clones, Captain Rex served under Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano during the Clone Wars. He defected after the establishment of the Empire, becoming an important leader in the early rebellion. A disillusioned Rex ultimately retired, but was brought back into play courtesy of Ahsoka’s abiding influence.

What’s perhaps most exciting about this retcon is that it sets up even more for Rex in future Star Wars stories. His active participation in a key part of this battle points towards him remaining a vital part of the Rebellion’s efforts, which could translate to a role in the New Republic – the era Star Wars is currently exploring in depth with The Mandalorian‘s universe. With Rex already having briefly appeared in an Ahsoka flashback, it could be that this move by Star Wars to make this retcon official is setting Rex up for a new chapter in his story.
