The Nosferatu rating has been revealed, and it will continue a trend for Robert Eggers. Remaking the classic 1920s German silent film, 2024’s Nosferatu will craft a story about the obsession Count Orlok, a vampire, has towards a young woman he haunts. Nosferatu features a leading cast including Emma Corrin, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp, and Ralph Ineson. The dark fantasy film is set for release on Christmas Day, December 25.
Per Blood Disgusting, Nosferatu has received its MPA rating. The source reveals that the Eggers film will be rated R. The content that led to the R-rating was stated as follows: “Bloody violent content, graphic nudity and some sexual content.” More details on how this will manifest in the film remain to be seen.
What This Means For Nosferatu
All Of Robert Eggers’ Features Have Been Rated R
Nosferatu is Eggers fourth feature film, and its R-rating aligns with all the director’s other work so far. Though the reasons for their ratings have been variable, all three of his previous works — The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman — have also received R-ratings. Given the content warnings, it is possible that Nosferatu may be one of the most intense of those films yet. Eggers’ career has shown that he is not going to shy away from adult-targeted content, but the vampire film’s descriptors are particularly intense.

Nosferatu: Release Date, Cast, Story, Trailer & Everything We Know
Horror maven Robert Eggers returns with his spin on the classic film, Nosferatu, and there are already a ton of terrifying details about the remake.
This likely bodes well for Eggers’ vision of Nosferatu. The early reactions to Nosferatu are already singing its praises, and though the applause has mostly focused on the performances, the intensity has also been noted. Using “blood violent content” is one way to convey such intensity and, in a vampire film, it is a sensible way to do so. The use of such elements will also please those who are going to see Nosferatu specifically for its horror element, as its level of blood and/or gore will likely be a subject of conversation given the rating.
Our Take On Nosferatu’s Rating
Nosferatu’s Rating Is A Good Sign
Eggers does not need violence or sex to make a good film, but being unrestrained by the pressure of PG-13 has assisted him in the past. In some ways, it is going to be hard to make it an R-rated movie with Christmas Day release. On the other hand, however, Nosferatu‘s competitors are Babygirl and A Complete Unknown, both of which are also rated R. Making an R-rated Nosferatu will almost certainly be worth it, as it will please horror fans and allow Eggers to go as dark as he wants with the film’s themes and plot.
