Lewis Tan reflects on his first Mortal Kombat role before he joined the 2021 big-screen adaptation, sharing a new photo from the unreleased web series Mortal Kombat X: Generations. The actor starred in the Warner Bros. adaptation of the popular fighting game franchise as the original character Cole Young, an MMA fighter and descendant of the ninja who would become Scorpion. Having been dragged into the inter-realm tournament and survived the battle, Cole is left to gather new allies, heading to Hollywood to recruit Johnny Cage in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 .
After many requests, Tan shares photos from the unreleased Mortal Kombat X: Generations, a web series that would presumably later be compiled as a film for a home release. They include a shot of him in costume as Kung Jin, a relative of Kung Lao featured later in Netherealm’s rebooted video game timeline, with the actor joking that he had played a character from the games. Stating that the movie was directed by Logan and Avatar stuntman and stunt co-ordinator Garret Warren, the second photo features him alongside actor Eric Roberts and Warren.

Little Is Known Despite The Series Being Filmed
While Mortal Kombat X: Generations has never been officially released despite the series reportedly being completed by various actors involved, Tan’s recent update is a welcome glimpse at various unseen characters. Alongside a new glimpse at Tan, a new look at Roberts as Raiden, the series’ mainstay Thunder God.
Generations was in fact a sequel to the two-season web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, taking that series’ narrative into the later events of the game, with Casper Van Dien returning as Johnny Cage and Booboo Stewart, Ron Yuan, and Ray Park making their series debut as Takeda, Scorpion, and Erron Black.

Any Likelihood Of The Project Releasing Has Dwindled
While Tan’s current Mortal Kombat story is continuing in 2025, his Twitter reminder may reopen old wounds for those who were invested in the franchise’s web series era. Alongside original movie Shang Tsung actor Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa reprising his role, season 2 saw a clearer pivot from its anthology style to a more serialized narrative, complete with a shocking cliffhanger where Liu Kang (Brian Tee) turns his back on Earthrealm and fights for Outworld.
Though there would have been a twenty-year gap between Mortal Kombat: Legacy and Mortal Kombat X: Generations, it is clear from returning cast members that some closure would have been given. However, with Warner Bros. Discovery growing increasingly open to scrapping projects, any slim likelihood of the series ever releasing has dwindled greatly. However, Tan’s post is a welcome glimpse at an alternate fate for the Mortal Kombat franchise.
