Kevin Costner has addressed his intentions for Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 3. The movie is part of what was an intended four-part Western epic directed and co-written by star Kevin Costner. While the first two chapters are already completed, Chapter 1 only earned $36.1 million worldwide against its $50 million budget, leading the upcoming Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 to be indefinitely delayed from its planned release date just over a month later.
Deadline shared a video of Kevin Costner speaking at the Venice International Film Festival, where he gave an emotional speech about the future of Horizon: An American Saga. In addition to teasing how the storyline of Chapter 2 will be even “harder” while Chapter 3 will be “devastating,” he revealed that he plans to continue making Chapter 3, even though he does not know how it will happen. He said that all four chapters are written that that he will “have to hurry” but he “can’t let go” of the metaphorical rope. Read Costner’s full quote below:
If there’s anything that you expect from part 2, you realize that 2 is harder than 1. It’s hard to go West. 3 is the same thing. It gets harder. But I will tell you this. Chapter 3 is devastating because… You begin to know all these people. Life keeps coming at them and you will see that… They’re all written. I have to hurry… Now that the rock [fell] back downhill, I have to go put my hands on it again and start to push it up. It’s a rope that I can’t let go [of.] I don’t know how I’m gonna make 3 right now, but I’m gonna make it.
The Future Of Chapter 3 Remains Murky But Optimistic
Kevin Costner’s comments somewhat clarify the current status of the franchise after the underwhelming Horizon: An American Saga box office performance. After principal photography on Chapter 3 kicked off in June, several weeks before the wide release premiere of Chapter 1, financing reportedly dried up and stalled the production as of mid-August. However, Costner made comments to TODAY just over a week after that report about having plans to return to the shoot by Spring 2025.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1‘s poor box office performance was compounded by a low Rotten Tomatoes score of 49%.
It is entirely possible that Costner’s Venice comments show that he is still intending to follow through on his plans to reunite the Horizon: An American Saga cast for further filming in Spring. While the financial situation of the project is likely still dire, the filmmaker has already self-funded a large portion of it. The Yellowstone star may not have any qualms about putting more money into Chapter 3 in order to see it come to fruition properly without any further delays.
Chapter 3 May Be The End Of The Franchise
While Costner seems certain that Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 3 is a priority, the emotion of his comments and his doubts about how to make the movie happen seem to imply that the franchise will likely not make it to its intended full length of four chapters. However, considering his commitment to completing the third installment and the fact that the scripts have already been written, it may be possible to condense the remaining story into one final epic in order to give the characters’ stories satisfying conclusions.
