The Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls sequel gets an update from one of its stars. The 2023 horror-comedy is about an occultist named Onyx who attends a unique ritual with some worshipers at the mansion of Bartok the Great. The film was written and directed by Andrew Bowser, who also played the titular character. In addition to Bowser, the film features a leading cast of Rivkah Reyes, Melanie Chandra, Terrene T.C. Carson, Arden Myrin, Barbara Crampton, Olivia Taylor Dudley, and Jeffrey Combs.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for his new movie The Blue Diamond, Crampton discussed the prospects of Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls 2. The actor stated that the first film was so hard to “get off the ground” and was “such an undertaking.” As a result, she is unsure how Bowser “feels about continuing that.” However, he acknowledged that the director loved playing Onyx and the ending “did leave it open” for a continuation to a sequel. Oh gosh. It was so hard for Andrew to get that off the ground, he did a Kickstarter. I would love that, it would be so much fun. I loved working with him. I don’t know, it was such an undertaking, and he’s still giving away prizes for people that contributed to the Kickstarter, so I don’t know how he feels about continuing that. I actually haven’t talked to him about it. They did leave it open, and he loves that character and he’s so good at it. Who knows? Maybe, I don’t know. Yeah, I love that movie. It’s so funny.

The Film Had Good Reviews
Though it was not a major horror movie release last year, the movie did get decent reviews. The critics’ reviews for the horror-comedy slanted positive, as the movie has a 66% Tomatometer with 38 critics’ reviews. Critics such as RogerEbert.com‘s Nick Allen, who called it “a handmade horror gem,” found the film incredibly appealing within its genre. The film’s reception was even better among audiences, who gave it a 96% Popcornmeter. These audience scores themselves are a good sign of the story’s continuation into a sequel.

Crampton’s quote seems far less hopeful about the prospects of an Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls sequel, however. The actor’s statement implies that making a sequel film would not be a particularly fruitful endeavor financially. After all, Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls was only distributed as a Fathom Event and made just $182,021 worldwide. Even on a low-budget, this would not typically be considered enough revenue to warrant the creation of a sequel.
Why This Could Be The Right Time For Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls 2
Low-Budget Horror Is On The Rise
While Crampton’s statement is not an encouraging sign for Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls 2, this could be the right time for a sequel for such a film to be made. Looking at recent successes such as Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey and this year’s Terrifier 3, I think it is safe to say that we are in a prime era for low-budget horror films. Terrifier 2, for instance, was a massive horror follow-up to the low-budget original. Despite Crampton’s reservations, this trend could bode well for Onyx 2, if Bowser were to make it.
Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls is a horror-comedy film that follows Onyx, an occultist looking for a purpose when invited to his idol’s mansion, Bartok the Great. In preparation for a demon summoning ritual, Onyx realizes that Bartok’s promises of better lives are a lie, leaving him to fight to save the souls of his friends.
