Hellboy: The Crooked Man‘s VOD release date has been revealed as the film still doesn’t have a U.S. theatrical release date. Directed by Brian Taylor and based on the character created by Mike Mignola, the fourth live-action installment in the Hellboy franchise serves as another reboot after the failure of the 2019 film. Hellboy: The Crooked Man stars Jack Kesy in the title role, following the character after he becomes stranded in a small town in 1950s Appalacchia, soon finding that the area is infested with witches.
A new listing on Amazon, as seen in the screenshot below, now reveals that Hellboy: The Crooked Man will become available to purchase on VOD on October 7, 2024. This news comes as the film remains without a U.S. theatrical release date. It hasn’t yet been officially confirmed one way or another whether the film will get any kind of theatrical run in the U.S.
What Hellboy: The Crooked Man’s VOD Release Date Means For Its Theatrical Chances
This Won’t Be A Comeback For The Hellboy Franchise
Hellboy: The Crooked Man is set to bow in theaters in the U.K. on September 27 after having debuted in several other international territories, including Belgium and Mexico. The film is also expected to become available in theaters in Australia on October 10. Ketchup Entertainment owns the U.S. distribution rights for the new Hellboy flick, and it’s now looking likely that the company won’t be releasing the film domestically in theaters at all.
The fact that it has a VOD release date set for early October doesn’t necessarily mean that theater play is off the table, however. While it definitely won’t be shown on the big screen before October 7, it could end up getting some play later in the month. If it does, though, most audiences will probably be out of luck, as a theatrical run at this point would probably be very limited. It certainly wouldn’t be enough for the flick to change the franchise narrative after 2019’s disappointment, and it’s likely another Hellboy movie won’t arrive for some time.
2019’s Hellboy was a critical and commercial disappointment, grossing only $55 million on an estimated budget of $50 million.
Our Take On Hellboy: The Crooked Man Going Straight To VOD
Will It Become A Cult Classic?
Since Hellboy: The Crooked Man hasn’t yet been widely released, there isn’t a lot of data with which to judge how the film has been received, but the response so far hasn’t been great. The reviews from the critics who have seen it have been mixed to negative, with Empire, for example, giving the film two out of five stars. This review is generally in line with how the movie has been received on Letterboxd, with the average audience score being, as of writing, 2.3 out of five.

This Is Not The Hellboy Movie I Wanted
While the story of Hellboy: The Crooked Man is promising, the trailer is anything but. Still, I haven’t written the newest reboot off completely yet.
From Hellboy: The Crooked Man trailers alone, the film looks to be a fairly low budget production. Combined with the lackluster reception from audiences thus far, it was probably decided that the film would fare better as a straight-to-VOD title. While it’s a shame that the film won’t get time to shine on the big screen in the U.S., a lower key VOD release might help the film eventually become a cult favorite. In any case, it’s clear that U.S. audiences looking to watch Hellboy: The Crooked Man don’t have long to wait.
