Joe Russo provides a key update on Extraction 3. The Netflix action series launched in 2020, chronicling the story of mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) who has to go on an incredibly deadly extraction mission. Both films are directed by Sam Hargrave and feature screenplays and stories by Anthony and Joe Russo, more famously known as the Russo Brothers. Since the release of last year’s installment, Extraction 3 was announced to be in talks.
Speaking with Collider, Joe Russo provided an update on Extraction 3, confirming it was moving forward, over a year after the film was said to be in talks. He also provided the progress status, saying that they are “in the middle of working on that story right now.” The screenwriter even claimed that “it’s definitely filming next year.” Check out the full quote from Russo below:
“We’re in the middle of working on that story right now. Hard at work. We’re hoping to go into production on it next year. It’s definitely filming next year. I’m just being cagey because it’s more fun.”
This update for Extraction 3 is one of the most hopeful since Russo initially spoke about the chances of a sequel in April 2023. Hemsworth has been vocal about wanting a third installment, but it wasn’t until June of last year that he confirmed it was in talks. Since then, Netflix film boss Scott Stuber spoke about the sequel later that year, and this year Hemsworth said that the sequel was “in the works.” Russo’s statement is the most concrete update on Extraction 3 yet.

Extraction 2’s ending brings the story to a surprisingly emotional conclusion, but it also sets up a third entry and possible spinoffs.
Russo did not specify exactly when Extraction 3 would begin filming, just that it would likely happen next year. With the story still in development, it seems that the movie will shoot no earlier than mid-2025. In this case, the likely release date will not come until 2026 at the earliest, and it could even be later should production get extended or delayed. If Extraction 3 is aiming for 2026, it would have the same gap between films as Extraction and Extraction 2 did.
Extraction has the potential to become one of Netflix’s biggest series, as, like its predecessors, the streamer will probably be its primary platform. Both Extraction movies have done well on Netflix in terms of viewership and have gotten good reviews. With Hemsworth on the rise again through recent performances, such as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the star could lead Extraction 3 to become another Netflix success.
