Emma Stone & Bradley Cooper Rom-Com Finds Success On Netflix Despite Box Office Failure 9 Years Ago

Aloha has made it to the Netflix Global Top 10. Released in 2015, Aloha tells the story of a military contractor who returns to Hawaii for a job and reconnects with an old lover while also falling for the Air Force member assigned to work with him. Aloha is directed by Cameron Crowe, who is best known for his work on Almost Famous. Aloha‘s leading cast features Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Emma Stone, Alec Baldwin, Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Danny McBride, Bill Camp, and Jaeden Martell.

Now, Aloha has become a hit on the Netflix Global Top 10. Aloha came in no. 8 on the Netflix Global Top 10 for the week of September 2 to September 8, amassing 4.3 million views. Topping the charts this week were Rebel Ridge at no. 1 (31.2 million views), The Deliverance at no. 2 (21.8 million views), and The Union at no. 3 (8.3 million views). Coming in at no. 8, Aloha beat out animated film Migration (no. 9) and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (no. 10).

How Aloha Was Received In Theaters

Aloha Bombed At The Box Office

Aloha‘s Netflix success comes after the film recently moved onto the streaming platform. Aloha arrived at Netflix on Sunday, September 1, just one day before the range in which it was eligible for this Netflix Global Top 10 counting period. Its newness to the platform likely drove up viewership of the film, as Aloha would have appeared on lists of what is new on Netflix. Still, Aloha had pretty immediate Netflix success.

Despite its success on streaming, Aloha was far from a hit when it was released in theaters. Across the duration of its theatrical run, Aloha took in just $26.2 million. Made on an estimated budget of $37 million, this total meant that Aloha lost a lot of money. Not only did the film not make it above the oft-cited threshold of bringing home 2x to 2.5x budget to break even, but it did not even make back the budget itself. This classified Aloha as a box office bomb.

In addition to the poor box office performance, Aloha‘s reviews were not positive. With over 150 critical reviews in, Aloha scored just a 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was also fairly controversial, garnering claims of whitewashing because of Emma Stone’s casting in a role that was supposed to be part-Chinese and part-Hawaiian. Audiences did not like it much better at the time, giving Aloha a 29% Popcornmeter. Despite this rocky history, audiences seem to be rediscovering Aloha as the film succeeds on Netflix.
