Emily Blunt Shares Her Daughters’ Candid Reactions To Seeing The Devil Wears Prada For The First Time

The Devil Wears Prada star Emily Blunt recalls that her daughters had a funny reaction after watching the film. Released in 2006, The Devil Wears Prada was directed by David Frankel, with a story that follows star Anna Hathaway‘s Andy Sachs, an aspiring journalist who takes a job at a leading fashion magazine only to find that the magazine editor, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), is a nightmare. Blunt stars in the film as Emily, Miranda’s overloaded and highly-strung assistant, and it remains one of the actor’s most memorable roles.

In a recent interview with Page Six while attending the 18th Annual American Institute for Stuttering gala, Blunt reveals that her two daughters didn’t particularly enjoy her character in The Devil Wears Prada. According to the actor, they ended up thinking that their mother was just like her short-tempered character in the film. Blunt also reflects on her experience in the movie more generally, recalling that it was her “first big movie.” Check out Blunt’s comment below:

“They thought I was the meanest person they’ve ever met. It’s incredible that it has such an indelible fingerprint on people … and it’s quoted to me every week. At the time I was young, it was my first big movie. I remember my agent calling me and telling me about the opening weekend. I was like, ‘Is that good?’ Like I didn’t know what was good.”

What The Devil Wears Prada Meant For Blunt’s Career

How The 2006 Movie Paved The Way For Bigger Roles

Blunt may be one of the most well-known female actors working in Hollywood today, but this certainly wasn’t always the case. The Devil Wears Prada was, in many ways, her big break. Prior to working on the Frankel film, Blunt had a prominent role in My Summer of Love (2004), but it wasn’t until her role as Emily that her career really took off. In the years following The Devil Wears Prada, Blunt appeared in movies like Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), The Young Victoria (2009), and The Adjustment Bureau (2011).

Blunt’s career would only continue to grow into the 2010s, and she appeared in hits like The Five-Year Engagement (2012), Looper (2012), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), Sicario (2015), A Quiet Place (2018), and Oppenheimer (2023). It wasn’t just Blunt’s career that took off with The Devil Wear’s Prada, however, as she and Hathaway actually followed a similar trajectory after the film, taking on steadily bigger roles in bigger movies. Streep, however, was already well-established, but The Devil Wears Prada undoubtedly remains one of her most memorable roles.

Our Take On Blunt’s The Devil Wears Prada Character

Blunt Makes Emily A Standout Character

Though Emily may not be the lead in The Devil Wears Prada, she’s a crucial ingredient in the story, and an example of just how poorly Andy’s job could go. Emily, in addition to Miranda, is an important source of antagonism, working to batter Andy down, lay out the rules, and exemplify what happens when that naivety wears off. But she’s also empathetic and tragic, in many ways, especially during The Devil Wears Prada‘s ending, and Blunt’s performance manages to walk this line perfectly.

Blunt has now appeared in some truly amazing roles in some amazing films, with Sicario serving as a true standout. Her standout role in The Devil Wears Prada certainly paved the way for some of these films, and the movie is proof that even in a supporting role Blunt can steal the show and leave an impression on viewers.
