It Was A Huge Hit At Cannes & Has An 88% Rotten Tomatoes Score

Following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where it received an extended standing ovation, Emilia Pérez is already heavily hyped and could be a major award-season contender for Netflix. The film competed for but did not win the festival’s highest honor in the Palme d’Or, though it did take home the Jury Prize, and its entire female ensemble – consisting of Saldaña, Gascón, Gomez, and Paz – won the Best Actress award. Soon after its premiere, Netflix outbid several studios and secured the film’s distribution rights for $8 million.

Overall, after its premiere at Cannes, reviews praised Emilia Pérez as a bold musical crime thriller that defies genre conventions while proudly telling a trans story, elevated by Gascón’s performance in the eponymous role, resulting in an 88% Rotten Tomatoes score. The teaser trailer highlights the immense acclaim for the movie, with critics calling it “a gorgeous musical epic” that is “bracingly original” and “unlike anything we have ever seen.” There is also much praise for the film’s three female leads, including Gascón who “electrifies,” Saldaña who “brings a burning intensity,” and Gomez who “is sparking on all cylinders.”

One critic also calls Emilia Péreza miraculous movie.”

Other than its unique blend of genres, the most exciting aspect of Emilia Pérez is its cast, which won the Best Actress award at Cannes and could be recognized further this coming awards season. Saldaña has starred in some of the highest-grossing movies ever made but has yet to add a major award nomination to her list of accomplishments. Gomez, fresh off her first Emmy nomination for acting in Only Murders in the Building, could also see her first Oscar nomination. However, of the three, the newcomer in Gascón might have the best chance of being nominated and even winning.
