Elizabeth Olsen’s New Movie Becomes One Of The Best-Rated 2024 Netflix Films On Rotten Tomatoes

The Elizabeth Olsen-led drama His Three Daughters is one of the best-rated Netflix movies on Rotten Tomatoes. The Azazel Jacobs-directed drama follows three sisters (played by Olsen, Carrie Coon, and Natasha Lyonne) as they reunite to say goodbye to their father (Jay O. Sanders), who is in his final days. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year to critical acclaim and is finally making its way to audiences, currently playing in select theaters before a Netflix release on September 20.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is currently sitting at a 98% approval rating based on 58 reviews. Many of its reviews were written during TIFF at the time of this writing, but more are starting to be published as the movie enjoys a limited theatrical run. On the site, the Critics Consensus reads, “Dealing with thorny family dynamics while remaining warm as a throw blanket, His Three Daughters is a compelling showcase for Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen, and Carrie Coon.”

His Three Daughters’ Critical Acclaim Bodes Well for Netflix This Fall

Many Highly-Anticipated Festival Titles Are Primed For Awards Season

As audiences in select markets begin to discover His Three Daughters, the film’s nearly-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and almost universal critical acclaim bodes very well for Netflix this fall. As many hotly-anticipated festival titles premiere in theaters and on streaming services, some are primed for awards recognition. His Three Daughters looks like a strong contender this fall as Netflix begins to ramp up campaigns for several of their high-profile movies.

While many Netflix movies were nominated for Oscars, such as The Irishman, Marriage Story, and, most recently, Maestro, the streamer hasn’t had much success campaigning for their films to win the top acting and picture prizes. Only Laura Dern won an acting Oscar for her supporting performance in Marriage Story in 2020, but no Netflix-nominated movie ever took home the Best Picture statue. The only one that came close was The Power of the Dog in 2022, but Apple’s CODA ultimately won the Oscar award for Best Picture.

Netflix acquired the worldwide distribution rights to His Three Daughters a month after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival for $7 million.

Elizabeth Olsen, Carrie Coon, and Natasha Lyonne are receiving incredible praise for their respective performances as Christina, Katie, and Rachel. This praise could translate to some form of awards recognition for their work in His Three Daughters, which is already one of Netflix’s must-see prestige films of the fall. Many more will be released on the streaming service in the coming months, including Emilia Pérez, The Piano Lesson, and Maria.
