Blake Lively’s New 2024 Movie Is Already Global Box Office Hit In Its Debut Weekend

It Ends with Us will likely be a global hit after just three days in theaters. The romance movie, which was directed by Justin Baldoni, who stars opposite Blake Lively, is adapted from the Colleen Hoover novel of the same name. It Ends with Us’ release has been marked by controversy surrounding the novel’s divisive depiction of domestic abuse as well as rumors of behind-the-scenes drama among the cast and crew, but that has not stopped the movie from taking No. 2 behind Deadpool & Wolverine at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.

Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, the global box office projections show It Ends with Us earning a 3-day total of more than $70 million. Its 3-day international projections show it landing between $27-30 million, which combined with its domestic total will bring its worldwide debut to somewhere between $72-79 million. This will automatically make it the 28th highest-grossing movie of the year in just three days, in addition to possibly earning back three times its $25 million budget, which likely means it will have already broken even and then some by Sunday evening.

The Movie’s Success Is A Marvel Compared To Its Budget

In addition to the It Ends with Us movie excelling on its own terms, it is performing well compared to other 2024 releases. Of the English-language movies above it on the chart (exact budget information is not available for Exhuma, Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle, The Roundup: Punishment, or Detective Conan: The Million-dollar Pentagram), only one, the indie horror thriller Longlegs, has a lower budget. A general rule of thumb is that a movie needs to earn somewhere between two and two-and-a-half times its budget in order to be considered profitable. While there are manifold exceptions to this rule, it is quite a feat that the It Ends with Us adaptation will have managed to pass the two-and-a-half milestone within a single weekend when two of the movies that outgrossed it weren’t able to do so. On top of that, along with Challengers, it is one of just two romantic dramas to be so high on the chart, let alone with such relatively low budgets.

It remains to be seen how high It Ends with Us’ box office can climb. If it is able to keep up its current momentum, it is possible that the movie could eventually follow the 2023 rom-com smash Anyone But You past the $200 million mark and beyond. However, that movie, which also came with a $25 million price tag, only had a global opening of roughly $10.4 million, so it is possible that the Blake Lively movie could blow its total out of the water and break box office records for a modern romance release.
