The trailer has been released for the upcoming thriller Black Bag. Black Bag is a spy drama directed by Steven Soderbergh. Soderbergh is a talented director best known for films such as Traffic and Sex, Lies, and Videotape, but his career has spanned many different genres. His recent work includes the thriller Kimi, the sequel Magic Mike’s Last Dance, and this year’s arthouse horror film Presence. Black Bag features a talented leading cast, including Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, Pierce Brosnan, Tom Burke, and Regé-Jean Page.
Now, Focus Features has released the trailer for Black Bag. The trailer begins by showing an exchange between the film’s central couple, Catherine (Blanchett) and George (Fassbender), wherein Catherine reveals that she is going to “Black Bag.” The scene then transitions into George explaining what it is like to be married to someone in the “industry” of Catherine. From the wife’s perspective, her “devotion to her marriage is [her] professional weakness.” One of the main plot setups is then revealed, which will involve George having to find a leak in a case wherein his wife is a suspect.
What This Means For Black Bag
Fassbender Is A Great Casting Choice
The spy couple setup is a novel concept for a film. Perhaps the most famous example of this is the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie-led Mr. & Mrs. Smith, wherein a husband and wife discover that they are both secretly working as assassins, and have now been hired to kill each other. Black Bag seems like a dramatic alternative to a comedy like Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Catherine asks George if he would “kill for her,” while at the same time, George has turned against her while trying to solve the mystery at heart.

These stakes will create a tense spy-drama in Black Bag. If there is any actor up for this kind of high-stakes task, it is Fassbender. In the last two years alone, Fassbender has been a part of two major thrillers. The first was the David Fincher-directed thriller The Killer in 2023, and the second is this year’s ongoing series The Agency, which is a political spy thriller. Both of these roles demonstrate Fassbender’s ability to be incredibly compelling in the thriller genre, making him a great lead for Black Bag.
