Vera Farmiga has reflected on saying goodbye to her character while filming The Conjuring: Last Rites. Farmiga has played real-life paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren opposite Patrick Wilson as Lorraine’s husband Ed for more than a decade, as they debuted their characters in the hit 2013 horror movie The Conjuring. The upcoming The Conjuring: Last Rites is set to be the final installment in the flagship franchise, which has also spawned spinoff franchises including Annabelle and The Nun.
On her official Instagram account, Vera Farmiga shared a photo of Ed and Lorraine’s wedding photo from The Conjuring Universe. She revealed that Wilson wraps filming on The Conjuring: Last Rites on the day of the post, November 21, and wrote a caption paying heartfelt tribute to her longtime co-star, saying “I got them feels today.” She reflected on roughly 5000 days of embodying the Warrens, ending the caption with “Here’s to 12 years. I cherish you.” See her original post below:
What This Means For The Conjuring Universe
The Franchise Still Has A Future
Farmiga’s tribute to Wilson signals that this is truly the end of an era for The Conjuring Universe. However, it does not necessarily mean that the franchise is ending. While there has been no follow-up officially announced, there are more projects in development based on Ed and Lorraine Warren’s cases, including a Max series set after the events of the movies that was announced in April 2023. It is also possible that more Annabelle and The Nun sequels could grace the screen.
Three Annabelle movies have premiered between 2014 and 2019, while the two Nun films premiered in 2018 and 2023 respectively.
It is also possible that Ed and Lorraine Warren could return in these potential upcoming projects in some capacity. They have appeared in many of the other spinoff movies, either via stock footage or new scenes. Even if one or both of them die in Last Rites, the fact that the majority of the spinoffs have been prequels could allow them ample in-universe opportunities to appear.
Ed And Lorraine Warren’s Story May Be Truly Over
Even though The Conjuring: Last Rites may not end up being the final appearance of Ed and Lorraine Warren in the Conjuring movies, for the time being, it seems that Farmiga is seeing this movie as a victory lap for the characters. While her heartfelt post seems to indicate that she is not ready to leave the Warrens behind, her appreciation for the characters may extend to the point that she might not want to needlessly extend their onscreen appearances if they are given a satisfying ending in the new movie.
