Ben Affleck’s The Accountant 2 Release Date Revealed

Summary

  • The Accountant 2 hits theaters on April 25, 2025, with a stellar cast and the same director from the original film.
  • The sequel follows Treasury Agent Marybeth teaming up with Christian Wolff and his brother to solve a murder.
  • While it’s the only major release set for April 25, it faces some hefty box office competition that could make it difficult for The Accountant 2 to match the original’s success.

With nine years gone since the first movie became a box office hit, The Accountant 2 has finally landed a release date. A sequel to Ben Affleck’s hit 2016 thriller has been in the works for the better part of a decade, finally gaining steam in January 2024 when Affleck and Jon Bernthal were confirmed to be returning, followed shortly thereafter by fellow original stars J. K. Simmons and Cynthia Addai-Robinson. The Accountant 2‘s story is expected to follow Addai-Robinson’s Treasury Agent Medina teaming with Affleck’s Christian Wolff and his brother, Bernthal’s Brax, to solve the murder of her former boss.

Deadline has brought word that The Accountant 2 is set to hit theaters on April 25, 2025, putting the sequel in theaters just over eight years after its predecessor’s release. Filming on the action-thriller follow-up began in March 2024 following a lengthy development cycle, with Affleck returning to lead the cast and Gavin O’Connor back to direct. At the time of writing, The Accountant 2 is the only major movie set for an April 25 release.

The Accountant 2 Has Hefty Competition To Match The Original’s $155M Success

While audiences have been keen to see The Accountant 2 get off the ground, particularly as the original proved to be a surprise hit, its current release date does create something of a problem for the sequel’s chances at success. The start of April 2025 will see the release of Warner Bros.’ Minecraft movie adaptation, which will look to match the April breakout success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. Though the rest of the month is mostly empty, save for the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, it’s May that will cause some major competition for Affleck and co.

May 2025 starts off with the release of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thunderbolts*, only the second MCU release of the year after Captain America: Brave New World. Though the franchise has struggled in recent years at the box office, Deadpool & Wolverine has put the MCU back on track to be a notable box office competitor. With both Mission: Impossible 8 and Karate Kid also coming in May 2025, there will be a lot of iconic franchises vying for the top spot.

Ben Affleck’s Exciting New $155 Million Movie Sequel Will Lead To Something Much Bigger

Ben Affleck has an exciting action movie coming up with the potential for more. It’s a sequel to his $155 million box office hit from 8 years ago.

Despite some of these hurdles, though, the one thing acting in The Accountant 2‘s favor at matching the original’s success is that its box office reception was generally a more modest one. Having grossed just over $155 million against its $44 million production budget, it wasn’t quite a runaway hit, but enough to warrant a sequel, and should the follow-up see an even larger box office turnaround, it could very well lead to the previously teased Accountant 3 plans.
