Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has passed a major milestone at the domestic box office after a month in theaters. The Tim Burton legacy sequel sees the director reuniting with multiple stars of the original 1988 horror-comedy, namely Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse, Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz, and Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz. The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice box office opened at the domestic box office with $111 million, which marked the third-highest debut of the year, and quickly rose past $400 million worldwide.
Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is projected to close out its sixth weekend in theaters with a 3-day gross of $7.3 million at the domestic box office. This lands the movie at No. 3 on the chart for the weekend, above the previous weekend’s debut Joker: Folie à Deux, which is cratering during its sophomore outing. This also brings the legacy sequel’s cumulative domestic total to $275.8 million, making it just the fifth 2024 release to pass the $275 million milestone, behind Dune: Part Two, Despicable Me 4, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Inside Out 2.
What This Milestone Means For Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
The Tim Burton Movie Is An Incontestable Smash Hit
Any way it is measured, this milestone is good news for the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice release. First and foremost, it has already proven itself to be a hit on its own terms. Typically, a movie needs to earn two and a half times its budget in order to break even, which would place the $100 million dollar movie’s break-even point at around $250 million. This milestone means that it has already made its money back in North America alone, without even counting its substantial international grosses.
The 1988 Beetlejuice only cost $15 million, which is roughly $40 million when adjusted for inflation.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is also inching ever closer to usurping 2010’s Alice in Wonderland ($334.2 million domestic) as the highest-grossing Tim Burton movie at the domestic box office. This may not prove to be possible, as it is still trailing behind Alice, which had already passed the $275 million milestone in its fourth weekend. However, it is still showing tremendous results for any Burton release, earning quintuple the original $74.8 million gross of the 1988 movie, and double its adjusted-for-inflation total of $202.4 million.
Our Take On The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Box Office Milestone
The Movie Is A Huge Comeback For Tim Burton
Even if it remains the second highest-grossing Tim Burton movie at the domestic box office, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has helped resuscitate the director’s career alongside the success of Netflix’s Wednesday, on which he also collaborated with star Jenna Ortega. The filmmaker’s recent output has suffered from critical and commercial diminishing returns, but this new legacy sequel has compounded its box office success with a Certified Fresh 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes, underscoring Burton’s continued potential.
