“Been A Rough Year For The Family”: Margaret Qualley Discusses Her Three 2024 Movie Roles

Margaret Qualley, one of Hollywood’s rising stars, opened up about the whirlwind of 2024, during which she starred in three films: Drive-Away Dolls, Kinds of Kindness, and The Substance. Though her roles earned her critical praise, they also brought about some humorous and awkward moments with her family, particularly as she is the daughter of actor Andie MacDowell. This is because all three movies either had some very graphic scenes or required Qualley to go bare-skinned herself, especially for the likes of The Substance, in which her and Demi Moore’s characters swap their bodies.

While speaking on the Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, Qualley revealed that her mother had a strong reaction to Drive-Away Dolls, asking her family and friends not to see it.

“My mom came to that premiere, and she — we get out of the movie, and she’s like… She’s like, ‘My friends can’t see this movie. My sisters can’t see this movie. No one can see this movie.”‘

The young star then recalled calling her father while he was on the way to see the Kinds of Kindness, urging him to turn around and avoid watching it with his friends.

“… for anyone who’s seen that movie, you can understand why it was a huge problem when my dad called me on the way to see the movie and in the car with his friends. And I was just like, ‘Please, Daddy, no, turn around. Don’t go. Daddy, don’t do it.”

But it was The Substance that caught her childhood nanny completely off guard, prompting a shocking text message after the viewing. Qualley has taken it all in stride, showing her humor and resilience as she navigates the challenges of her blossoming career.

“So, I had a nanny growing up, Julie Shelby, who’s, like, a youth group minister, super Christian, sweet Southern lady. And, um, you know, when she used to take me to the mall, she would, like, shield my eyes when we passed Abercrombie & Fitch advertisements… So she texted me yesterday, and she was like… She was like, ‘You should have warned me.’ She was there the whole time being like, ‘Oh, God help her, please. Bless her soul. Lord have mercy. Bless my soul. Bless all of our souls. Forgive us for our sins.'”
