Belle’s Dress Faced Many Complications In Animation and Live-Action
While an anachronistic mix of styles that had to be fought for by Beauty & the Beast‘s art director Brian McEntee, Belle’s dress has became one of the most recognizable outfits among Disney’s entire roster of princesses. A physical representation of Belle’s growth as she opened up as a person and showed her warmth, McEntee resisted calls by Disney’s marketing department to make the gown pink or lavender to better fit with what they felt young girls would be drawn to. With the stunning visuals of Belle and the Beast’s dance, the costume has a special place in many’s hearts.
However, the status of Belle’s dress would later cause trouble for Disney when bringing the tale into reality in Beauty & The Beast’s live-action adaptation. While Academy Award-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran was given the difficult task of redesigning a realistic rendition of the gown, the real-world costume was met with a divisive response, attracting praise for capturing its appearance, though the realistic textures and muted hues failed to help the dress stand out.
