- After a string of more serious dramas in recent years, a UFO movie will see Spielberg returning to his summer blockbuster roots.
According to a new report, Steven Spielberg‘s upcoming untitled UFO movie could be adding an Oscar-winning actor to the cast. Spielberg remains one of the best-known and revered filmmakers working in Hollywood today, and he’s responsible for films like Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, and Saving Private Ryan, just to name a few. Following the critically-acclaimed The Fabelmans in 2022, it was recently reported that Spielberg’s next movie will be about UFOs, with Emily Blunt having been cast in a lead role and frequent collaborator David Koepp penning the script.
A new report from Deadline now reveals that actor Colin Firth is circling a lead role in Spielberg’s UFO movie. Plot details for the film remain under wraps, so details about who Firth would play are, naturally, entirely unknown. If Firth does join the film, this would mark the first ever collaboration between him and Spielberg.
Spielberg’s UFO movie is rumored to be titled The Dish, and its release date is currently scheduled for May 2026.
Why A UFO Movie Is Perfect As Steven Spielberg’s Next Project
Spielberg Should Return To The Summer Blockbuster
Spielberg is undeniably the king of the Hollywood summer blockbuster. Movies like Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Jurassic Park are all the perfect combinations of exciting and fun. Many of his more recent projects, however, have been more understated dramatic works. Both 2021’s West Side Story and The Fabelmans were well-received, but they certainly couldn’t be described as fun summer blockbusters.
Spielberg has explored the sci-fi world of aliens before to powerful effect, including in E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and War of the Worlds.
2018’s Ready Player One was the last time Spielberg was really aiming for mass popcorn entertainment, and that film earned somewhat lukewarm reviews, especially by Spielberg standards. Before that, he undertook a string of mostly serious dramas, including The Post, Bridge of Spies, Lincoln, and War Horse, though 2016’s The BFG is an obvious outlier. Spielberg’s upcoming UFO film, however, feels like it could be a throwback to some of his earlier films from the ’80s and ’90s in the best way.

Steven Spielberg’s new sci-fi UFO movie can make up for his last sci-fi project, Ready Player One, which saw an extremely divisive audience reaction.
If both Blunt and Firth appear in the cast, Spielberg’s UFO movie is already in great shape. It’s still early days for the project, but it will certainly be exciting to see the director go back to the kind of film that he essentially built his career on, especially since Koepp is writing the script. With casting seemingly underway, more concrete information regarding Spielberg‘s UFO movie could be arriving over the next few weeks.
