Pushpa 2: The Rule has become one of the highest-grossing Indian movies of all time. The Telugu-language movie is the sequel to 2021’s Pushpa: The Rise and stars Allu Arjun in the title role as a sandalwood smuggler who is working to maintain his business despite major pushback from Indian Police Service superintendent Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat (Fahadh Faasil). The cast also includes Rashmika Mandanna, Jagadeesh Prathap Bandari, Jagapathi Babu, and Sunil. 2024’s Pushpa 2: The Rule had a record-breaking debut in early December, earning the highest-grossing opening day in India for an Indian movie.
Per The Numbers, Pushpa 2: The Rule has now grossed a whopping $154.6 million worldwide. While this pales in comparison to massive Hollywood blockbusters such as Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.34 billion), the movie’s worldwide total makes it the third highest-grossing Indian movie of all time. It is also the highest-grossing Indian movie of the decade so far, as the No. 2 title is 2017’s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and the No. 1 Indian movie is 2016’s Dangal.
What This Means For Pushpa 2: The Rule
The Movie Has Beaten Out Major Indian Hits
The fact that Pushpa 2: The Rule has become the highest-grossing Indian movie of the 2020s means that it has outsold many major Indian hits including Kalki 2898 AD, Animal, KGF: Chapter 2 and the Shah Rukh Khan vehicles Jawan and Pathaan. It has also outgrossed the smash hit 2022 movie RRR, which became one of very few Indian movies to ever earn an Oscar when it won the award for Best Original Song.
Kalki 2898 AD is the most expensive Indian movie of all time, with a budget of roughly $70.5 million.
However, Pushpa 2‘s prominence at the box office does not necessarily mean that it will be a strong awards contender in 2025. So far, it has not earned nods from any of the major awards that have already announced their nominations, which include the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards. It has also not been shortlisted for the Academy Award for International Feature, as India’s official submission was the Kiran Rao dramedy Laapataa Ladies, which also failed to make the shortlist.
Our Take On The Pushpa 2: The Rule Box Office
A Major Global Franchise Is Starting
The box office success of Pushpa 2: The Rule proves the franchise’s viability in the global market. This has been the case even in North America, where it debuted at No. 4, easily beating out that weekend’s English-language new release Y2K. However, this is likely just the beginning of what could become a major box office IP. The end of the Indian action movie promises that the follow-up Pushpa 3: The Rampage is on its way, so the franchise is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.
