John Lawson, who played Kano in the 2021 Mortal Kombat film, has teased the character’s return in the anticipated sequel, Mortal Kombat 2. Following the success of the 2021 film, which grossed $84 million worldwide against a $55 million budget and became HBO Max’s most successful film launch at the time, Mortal Kombat 2 promises to expand on the story and bring back fan-favorite characters, some in unexpected ways. Despite meeting a grim fate in the first movie, Kano will return for another round, this time with what Lawson describes as a “2.0” version of his character.
In a recent conversation with The Direct, Lawson teased the future of Kano. Even though the character started as a good guy in 2021’s Mortal Kombat, he later turned against Earthrealm after being offered an awful lot of money, which led him to his demise at the hands of Jessica McNamee’s Sonya. Despite his death, Kano has already been confirmed to return for next year’s Mortal Kombat 2. Check out Lawson’s full comment below:
I can say that in the second ‘Mortal Kombat,’ Kano has a new chapter in his life, that [chapter] being death. And you know, death alters you. So yeah, prepare yourselves for a Kano 2.0. As we all know, if anyone’s a fan of games, Kano’s alliances can change at the drop of a hat, and that’s certainly true in the second one… [It’s going to] keep you on your toes guessing [about] who Kano’s kind of siding with.
What Kano’s Return Means For Mortal Kombat 2
More Chaos And Mystery
It is safe to say that Mortal Kombat 2 is expected to expand the lore of the franchise and the foundation laid by the first movie, while still delivering the intense action and wild character moments that viewers have come to expect. The sequel will probably dig deeper into the tournament and its impact on the characters, with Lawson’s Kano acting as a wild card in the high-stakes battles. His resurrection is a key development for the sequel that adds an extra layer of mystery to the plot.
Kano’s resurrection was teased in the first movie, with Shang Tsung (Chin Han) saying that “death is just another portal.” His death in the first film likely had a severe impact. In the game, Kano is a notorious wild card, often switching sides for personal gain. Kano’s new lease on life might lie with Shang Tsung, the master of souls who uses his dark sorcery to manipulate death and resurrection. Shang Tsung could have revived Kano for his sinister agenda. Whether he returns as an ally, a villain, or something in between, Kano’s new persona makes him a key character in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2.

Kano’s comeback in Mortal Kombat 2 demonstrates the franchise’s commitment to keeping fans on their toes. Lawson’s portrayal of Kano in the first film was a highlight, and his comeback is sure to add a compelling twist to the sequel. Since its debut in 1992, the Mortal Kombat universe has thrived on its rich lore and unpredictable characters, and Kano’s mystery resurrection perfectly captures that spirit. With the sequel promising to dive deeper into the lore and bring more iconic characters to life, it’s clear that Mortal Kombat 2 is aiming to be bigger and bolder than its predecessor.
