Terrifier 3 has hit several huge box office milestones at the end of its first week. The new movie, from writer-director Damien Leone, is a runaway smash featuring new slasher icon Art the Clown in another gory rampage. It boasts the biggest budget of the franchise at $2 million, which is still quite low by modern Hollywood standards. In its opening weekend, Terrifier 3 beat Joker: Folie à Deux, taking No. 1 at the domestic box office in a surprise upset by earning $18.9 million.
Per The Numbers‘ Wednesday update, Terrifier 3 has already crossed the $25 million milestone at the domestic box office, earning $25.45 million in North America as it approaches the end of its first week in theaters. Its international grosses have additionally pushed its global gross to $28 million, which is 14 times more than its budget. Because it cost eight times more than the previous installment, which only cost $250,000, this means it has grossed more than 112 times Terrifier 2‘s budget in the span of just six days.
What This Box Office Total Means For Terrifier 3
It Is Performing Well In The 2024 Horror Sphere
Terrifier 3 has now become the 47th movie to pass the $25 million milestone at the domestic box office in 2024 so far. While it is performing extremely well for its budget level, there is still a lot of room to grow, though it is already the 10th highest-grossing 2024 horror movie at the domestic box office. Below, see how it compares to the highest-grossing horror movies of the year so far, not counting the comedy-forward horror-comedy Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire or the serial killer thriller Trap, both of which are only questionably horror movies:
|
Title |
Domestic Gross |
|---|---|
|
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice |
$277.9 million |
|
A Quiet Place: Day One |
$138.9 million |
|
Alien: Romulus |
$105.2 million |
|
Longlegs |
$74 million |
|
Speak No Evil |
$35.7 million |
|
The Strangers: Chapter 1 |
$35.2 million |
|
Night Swim |
$32.5 million |
|
Imaginary |
$28 million |
|
Abigail |
$25.8 million |
|
Terrifier 3 |
$25.45 million |
It seems likely that the Terrifier 3 release will outgross Radio Silence’s Abigail by the end of Thursday, as the salsher sequel has consistently grossed more than $1 million each weekday so far. It seems poised to climb more slots up the chart during its second weekend, as well. While the horror genre typically sees harsh second-weekend drops of 50% or more, even a harsh 65% drop would earn it an additional $6.6 million, which would see it race past the Blumhouse horror offerings Imaginary and Night Swim.
Our Take On The Terrifier 3 Box Office
Its Domestic Gross Could Continue To Climb
There is no telling how high Terrifier 3 will be able to climb by the end of its run. It has already outgrossed the entire $15.7 million run of the previous installment and become more than profitable, likely passing its break-even point at around the $5 million mark. If it continues to rise proportionally to the indie horror hit Longlegs, which opened to $22.4 million and grossed $74 million domestic, it could eventually gross more than $60 million in North America alone, which would be a whopping 30 times its budget.
