The Wild Robot 2 In Development After Becoming One Of The Best 2024 Animated Movies

A sequel to The Wild Robot is in development. The new DreamWorks animated movie, which is based on the Peter Brown children’s book of the same name, follows a robot named Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) who is stranded on a desert island and finds herself growing wild and free while caring for an orphaned gosling, Brightbill (Kit Connor). The Wild Robot release has already become a smash critical and commercial success, earning a Certified Fresh 98% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes with a matching Verified Hot audience score and grossing more than $100 million worldwide in its first two weeks.

Per Deadline, a sequel to The Wild Robot is already in the works. At Deadline Contenders, director Chris Sanders, who has previously helmed the well-regarded DreamWorks movie How to Train Your Dragon, confirmed that “100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one.” He did not reveal any further details about the project, which seems to be in the very early stages of development.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen if the sequel comes to fruition and reunites the Wild Robot cast and characters in a satisfactory way that makes it a success. However, this seems like an entirely likely prospect, especially if the movie wins the Best Animated Feature Oscar, for which it is a strong contender. If this happens, it could become a long-running franchise at the level of Shrek or Kung Fu Panda, expanding into a phenomenon well beyond the heights it has already reached.
