Freakier Friday now has a release date, and it has been announced with a perfect image throwback to the first movie. Released in 2003, Freaky Friday stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as Tess and Anna Coleman, a mother and daughter who accidentally switch bodies. A sequel called Freakier Friday is now on the way from director Nisha Ganatra, with a story that features another body-swapping adventure, but this time bringing Anna’s new daughter, husband, and soon-to-be stepdaughter into the mix.
Disney now shares a new post on X, formerly Twitter, revealing that Freakier Friday will hit theaters on August 8, 2025. The post announcing the release date is accompanied by an image of Curtis and Lohan paying homage to an iconic moment from the original film, with actors seen screaming next to each other in a bedroom in their pajamas. What Freakier Friday’s New Update Means For The Film
Expect Callbacks To The 2003 Original
The original Freaky Friday earned mostly positive reviews from critics and boasts an impressive 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. Though the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is a lackluster 58%, the film grossed $160.8 million worldwide on an estimated $20 million budget, and it remains a staple of the body-swap subgenre, especially for family audiences. With the latest release date announcement, Freakier Friday is now confirmed to be hitting theaters 22 years after the first film. An August release date means the first trailer for the movie likely won’t be released until the end of 2024 or in early 2025.
A typical Hollywood film generally has to earn between two to two-and-a-half times its budget to break even, meaning Freaky Friday was a massive hit.

Freaky Friday 2 Has A Golden Opportunity To Repeat This Iconic Musical Moment
Freaky Friday 2 (dubbed Freakier Friday) is bringing back two characters from the original movie, hinting that we will get another musical moment.
Any sequel has the challenging job of recapturing what made the original film special while also pushing the story in a new direction. The image suggests that Freakier Friday‘s story will be attempting to do just that, offering up plenty of nostalgic elements, such as callbacks and references to the first film, while also acknowledging just how much time has passed. It’s notable in the image, for example, that both Tess and Anna are wearing more adult pajamas this time, when in the first film Anna was very much a rebellious teenager.
Our Take On Freakier Friday’s New Update
Will The Sequel Justify Its Own Existence?
The original Freaky Friday arguably didn’t need a sequel, especially more than two decades later, and Freakier Friday will have its work cut out for it in terms of justifying its own existence. It won’t be enough to just redo the plot of the first film with some new characters and a handful of callbacks to elements from the original.
That being said, leaning into Anna’s adulthood and the evolved nature of her relationship with Tess could be a good path for the sequel. Freakier Friday has an opportunity to explore themes relating to family in a new way, while also offering up plenty of comedic moments. It remains to be seen whether Anna and Tess’ new adventure will be as fun as the original movie, but audiences, at the very least, can now mark Freakier Friday‘s release date on their calendars.
