A cavalcade of original stars has joined the cast of the Peaky Blinders movie. The upcoming feature will be a continuation of the BBC series of the same name, which dramatized the lives of the titular real-life Birmingham street gang in the early 20th century and ran for six seasons between 2013 and 2022. The upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, which is currently shooting under the auspices of director Tom Harper working from a screenplay by the show’s creator Steven Knight, has already set the return of star Cillian Murphy reprising the role of crime boss Tommy Shelby.
Per Variety, five returning stars have been set to reprise their original roles in the Peaky Blinders movie opposite Cillian Murphy. Those stars are Stephen Graham as dockworker union leader Hayden Stagg, Sophie Rundle as Tommy’s sister Ada Shelby, Ned Dennehy as the Shelbys’ family friend Charlie Strong, Ian Peck as Charlie’s assistant Curly, and Packy Lee as Tommy’s cousin, friend, and employee Johnny Dogs.
Also joining the cast is Jay Lycurgo, whose character is still unknown. Lycurgo is likely best known for his role as Tim Drake in the DC Comics TV show Titans, but he also held a small role as Train Gang Young Member in 2022’s The Batman and appears in the 2024 horror-comedy The Radleys.
What This Cast Update Means For The Peaky Blinders Movie
The Movie Will Be A True Continuation
The return of so many members of the original Peaky Blinders cast offers some insight into the overall story of the movie. Although the project will also feature new characters played by stars including Barry Keoghan, Rebecca Ferguson, and Tim Roth, it will honor the legacy of the long-running series by surrounding Tommy with a variety of familiar faces.
Major stars from the original run of the show who have not yet been confirmed to return include Paul Anderson, Benjamin Zephaniah, and Natasha O’Keeffe.
While the exact story and timeline of the movie is still unknown, these returning characters also seem to indicate that it will be a direct continuation from season 6. While Rundle, Dennehy, Peck, and Lee appeared in all six Peaky Blinders seasons as either series regulars or recurring stars, Graham was a new addition in season 6. His return makes it likely that the movie will draw from the overarching storylines of the final season, which concluded on April 3, 2022.
Our Take On The Peaky Blinders Cast Announcement
It Could Reveal The Movie’s Timeline
In addition to being an exciting development that makes the Peaky Blinders movie feel like a proper installment, the returning cast likely means that the timeline of the movie will operate similarly to the original show. Nearly every season featured a two or three year time jump, slightly expanding the real-life one or two year hiatuses between them, except the final season, which had a three-year hiatus and a five-year time jump. As it will likely be three years or more between the series finale and the movie’s premiere, another five-year time jump could be in the cards.
