A Complete Unknown Trailer: Timothée Chalamet’s Bob Dylan Breaks Out, Joan Baez & Johnny Cash Revealed

The new trailer has been released for A Complete Unknown. The upcoming biopic stars Timothée Chalamet as the acclaimed musician Bob Dylan. The film chronicles Dylan’s life as an up-and-coming singer trying to make it in New York. Directed by James Mangold, the biopic also features a supporting cast of Elle Fanning, Scoot McNairy, Edward Norton, Boyd Holbrook, Monica Barbaro, James Austin, and Charlie Tahan.

Now, Searchlight has released the new trailer for A Complete Unknown. Check it out below:

The trailer begins by showing Dylan (Chalamet) arriving in New York from Minnesota as the tune of “Girl from the North Country” plays. As the young musician gets discovered, he connects with other artists, including Joan Baez, with whom he is seen singing in the previews. Dylan is also seen conversing about his fame with others, including Fanning’s Sylvie Russo. As the trailer continues, Dylan adapts to his fame, which comes with an iconoclastic attitude towards the music industry.

What A Complete Unknown Trailer Means For The Movie

A Complete Unknown Will Cover Bob Dylan’s Music Industry Tensions

The new trailer for A Complete Unknown reveals Dylan’s attitude towards music, despite how belligerent it may be. He is unafraid to share his opinion, telling Baez, for example, that her “songs are like an oil painting at the dentist’s office.” The character also expresses not being “plain” and being “whatever it is they [the public and music industry] don’t want [him] to be.” This reflects on his evolving music, which ranged from folk and rock in the 1960s to country and gospel in the 1970s. This establishes that Dylan’s friction with the music industry will be a primary tension in A Complete Unknown.

The trailer also hints at how Dylan’s personal life, or lack thereof, will factor into his character. At one point, Sylvie points out that Bob never talks about his family. The musician coyly replies, “People make up their pasts, Sylvie. They remember what they want, they forget the rest.” This creates an almost mysterious intrigue concerning Bob Dylan, as his family life is only briefly mentioned, so more details will likely be revealed about his background. This is pertinent as Dylan previously spoke about having a rebellious childhood, which he later shared was false.

Will A Complete Unknown Be Timothée Chalamet’s Oscar Chance?

Chalamet Has A Lot Of Points In His Direction

Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan singing in A Complete Unknown

Watching the newest trailer for A Complete Unknown, I cannot help but think that Chalamet’s Oscar chances have just gotten better. The scene with Sylvie seems like it could be a potential dramatic Oscar moment. But even in subtler scenes, the actor is tasked with mastering the mannerisms of a highly idiosyncratic celebrity. Chalamet also has to sing, which is a promising factor for his Oscar hopes. Therefore, I think Chalamet has a shot of at least being nominated for Best Actor at the next Oscars.

Chalamet was previously nominated for Best Actor for Call Me By Your Name.
