A new Moana 2 trailer has arrived and teases the next adventure for Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) and Maui (Dwayne Johnson). The highly-anticipated sequel began as a Disney+ series before being reworked as a feature-length movie. In addition to Cravalho and Johnson, Moana 2‘s cast sees Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, and Alan Tudyk reprising their respective roles from the first movie as Moana’s father, Tui, her mother, Sini, and her chicken friend, Heihei.
Now, Disney has unveiled a new trailer that shows Moana with her younger sister, features notes from the movie’s new songs, and glimpses at the dangers she and Maui will face this time as they cross the vast ocean. Check out the trailer below:
Moana explains that the ancestors have tasked her with reconnecting her people to other civilizations across the ocean, which is the impetus for the new quest. This time, she is not only joined by Maui and Heihei, but by her pig, Pua, and several others.

Moana 2 Balances New And Familiar Elements
Moana 2 cleverly acknowledges that nearly a full decade has passed since the original movie with Moana’s little sister saying, “You were gone forever,” while scowling and crossing her arms. The trailer is an assurance that the long wait is nearly over while making it clear that time has passed for Moana, who looks different as she is now a few years older and has taken on an even more prominent role among her people. Her courageous, compassionate, and daring personality seems unchanged, as does her dynamic with Maui.
“How Far I’ll Go” became one of the most iconic songs from the first movie, and there is a good chance the sequel’s song featuring the lyrics heard as Moana sets sail will become just as popular this time. Other familiar elements, including the coconut-like Kakamora, return, with Moana needing to use her oar to deflect their darts. The towering, purple-glowing monster creating a storm is new, though, and even makes Maui wish they were facing the Lava Monster again, proving the sequel will openly reference events from its predecessor.

Moana 2 Looks Like Another Disney Success
The Moana 2 trailer promises that the sequel will feature many of the same elements that made the first movie a critical and commercial hit. With Pua along for the adventure this time, new characters like Maui’s little sister, and even more daunting stakes, the story should still feel different enough while retaining what made the original a success. The animation is stunning to behold and the songs already sound catchy. While there are some concerns about it pivoting from a Disney+ series to a feature-length movie, all other signs point to Moana 2 being another successful Disney 2024 movie.
