Marvel Studios is reportedly setting their eyes on the major industry awards as they are campaigning for Oscar nominations for Deadpool & Wolverine after the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film. One of the biggest hits for the MCU became Deadpool & Wolverine, as it became the biggest R-rated movie of all time and Marvel’s second billion-dollar release since Avengers: Endgame. From the many Marvel cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine to the successful storyline that tackled the multiverse, the Phase 5 adventure is still garnering buzz worldwide.
Variety reveals that Marvel Studios is submitting Deadpool & Wolverine for Golden Globes consideration in the comedy categories. Additionally, the studio is submitting Reynolds for consideration in the Golden Globes’ best actor category. Meanwhile, Jackman will be submitted for consideration for best supporting actor in multiple major races, including the Oscars, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics Choice Awards. The Phase 5 movie will also be targeting nominations in the technical categories, from visual effects to production design.
What Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine Oscar Campaign Means
The massive attention that Deadpool & Wolverine has garnered both leading up to, during, and after its theatrical release justifies why Marvel Studios is vying for the Oscars, especially in Jackman’s case. Since the Australian actor came back to the Marvel role after initially being done in 2017, they are obviously also capitalizing on his overall legacy as Wolverine, especially since he got to give one of his most well-received performances as Logan in Deadpool & Wolverine. After all, Jackman is one of very few actors in Hollywood to have ever played a superhero for this long.
However, it is crucial to remember that when it comes to the actor categories, superhero movies don’t always tend to win, since comic book films mostly go home with victories in the technical categories. Nevertheless, it’s still admirable to see Marvel Studios at least try, and it wouldn’t be unheard of for an MCU actor to get a nomination for a Marvel Studios film, with Angela Bassett’s Best Supporting Actress nomination for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever being a primary example. It’s always possible that Jackman’s performance in Deadpool & Wolverine could at least score him a nomination.
Our Take On Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine Oscar Campaign
While Marvel Studios always tries to hype up most of their MCU movies for awards season, it makes sense that they are raising the bar for Deadpool & Wolverine after its success at the box office and with audiences. It will be fascinating to see where these characters go after the Deadpool & Wolverine ending, as Marvel Studios has yet to reveal where Reynolds and Jackman will show up next. However, given that they are looking to run these big campaigns for them, the world has likely not seen the last of Wade and Logan after Deadpool & Wolverine.
