Green Arrow actor Stephen Amell opens up about how there was almost an Arrow movie for his take on the DC hero and explains why it didn’t move forward. It has been nearly four years since the Arrow ending brought a conclusion to Oliver Queen’s journey in the Arrowverse. While Amell did appear in an episode of The Flash season 9 in 2023, the world is always hoping to see more of his iteration of the DC hero in the future.
During his latest appearance on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, Amell was asked if he would ever be up for doing an Arrow movie. However, it turns out this was an idea they had explored before, as Amell revealed that an Arrow movie was close to happening, sharing the following:
That would be fun. We tried to do that, but it didn’t [happen]. To my understanding, it just got killed at the studio level from people that I think were making decisions that were fear-based.
For clarity, it remains to be seen when this Arrow movie was being developed, as it is unclear if the project was being attempted during or after the show’s run. It’s possible Amell or any of the Arrowverse creatives may elaborate further on when they were trying to make this Arrow film happen. However, outside of Amell’s comments, this does raise a very interesting situation for the Arrowverse as a whole.
If Warner Bros. was even willing to contemplate doing an Arrow movie to begin with, it could mean they may have been open to other Arrowverse TV shows getting some type of movie. What is even more fascinating, though, is that with James Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership at DC Studios, it could mean that other Arrowverse series could get follow-up films as part of their Elseworlds brand.
Our Take On How An Arrow Movie Almost Happened
If Arrow had gotten a movie in any capacity, it would have been intriguing to see what kind of story they would have tackled for Oliver, especially after his temporary return to the Arrowverse in 2023. Since The Flash season 9 established that Oliver could only return as the Spectre when the multiverse was in danger, an Arrow movie would likely have had to involve that plot concept in order for a film to make sense. Despite not having a movie happening, the audience can always relive every single season of Arrow on Blu-ray/DVD and through streaming.
