One of the most fan-pleasing Deadpool & Wolverine character returns is Dafne Keen’s Laura Kinney a.k.a. X-23, who joins Deadpool and Wolverine’s fight against Cassandra Nova and is revealed to have been saved from the Void in Deadpool & Wolverine‘s emotional ending. With Wade and Logan likely to return and eventually join the MCU’s Earth-616, X-23 is also likely to continue her heroic journey despite the end of Fox’s X-Men movie franchise.
On X, artist @yamuoex shares a piece of fan art depicting X-23 after Deadpool & Wolverine‘s ending, picking up Wolverine’s mask and trying it on herself. Following the events of Deadpool & Wolverine, Laura will likely be very intrigued by Wolverine’s mask, as it only exists in the form of comic book drawings in her timeline. In Logan, the titular hero catches Laura reading X-Men comic books, and he reprimands her for believing in their retelling of the X-Men’s adventures, saying that “maybe a quarter of it happened, and not like this”. Now that X-23 is back and a new, more optimistic Wolverine has taken her under his wing, there’s a chance she will want to follow in his footsteps and eventually inherit the Wolverine mantle.
Jackman’s Logan could simply pass on the torch to Dafne Keen’s X-23, who could become All-New Wolverine
Although the MCU may be heading towards a franchise-wide soft-reboot after Avengers: Secret Wars, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is such a popular character that he might stay in the MCU’s main continuity, at least for a few years afterward. However, Jackman will eventually retire. So, in order to avoid having to explain a second reboot exclusively for Wolverine, Jackman’s Logan could simply pass on the torch to Dafne Keen’s X-23, who could become All-New Wolverine — the title Laura Kinney receives in the comics when she adopts the Wolverine mantle following Logan’s death.
Given that James Mangold’s Logan introduced a much younger X-23 than usual, Dafne Keen has matched the age her character is regularly portrayed to be, which gives her the perfect chance to keep playing the character indefinitely after Deadpool & Wolverine. After her next couple of on-screen adventures alongside Wolverine, X-23 could then be welcomed by the MCU’s own X-Men or another MCU mutant team. And similarly to the source material, X-23 could be the main Wolverine for a while until Logan returns — this time played by a new actor.
