Joey King’s latest movie, Uglies, has received a fairly poor critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by McG, the movie stars King as Tally Youngblood, who lives in a world where a mandatory operation makes everyone pretty and eliminates their physical differences. The Uglies cast also includes Brianne Tju, Chase Stokes, Laverne Cox, and Keith Powers.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie’s current score has been revealed, and it is not great. At the time of publication of this article, the film sits at a 20% approval rating based on 20 reviews. No critical consensus has been given, but many reviews have discussed how unoriginal the movie feels, and criticized its underdeveloped social commentary. The score is expected to fluctuate as more reviews get tabulated.
Uglies Continues Joey King’s Dismal Trend on Rotten Tomatoes
King Has Starred In Many Rotten YA Films.
While Uglies boasts an impressive cast of young actors, it follows a streak of poorly received films for Joey King. The 25-year-old actor is mostly known for having starred in Netflix’s The Kissing Booth trilogy alongside Jacob Elordi and Joel Courtney. Like Uglies, the franchise was based on Beth Reekles’ trilogy of books of the same name, which achieved widespread success.
While the movies were all massive commercial hits on the streaming service, they weren’t very critical darlings and were even criticized by one of their stars, Elordi, calling them “ridiculous.” The first movie currently has a 15% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 13 reviews. There wasn’t much improvement on parts two and three, which have a 29% and 24% approval rating, respectively.

King has also starred in many critically panned movies, including Wish Upon, Stonewall, Slender Man, and most recently, A Family Affair, which co-starred Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman. However, she also starred in many critically acclaimed movies, including The Conjuring, Ramona and Beezus, and Crazy, Stupid, Love. Unfortunately, Uglies doesn’t seem like one of those movies and adds another critical dud to King’s expansive filmography.
Uglies is based on the 2005 dystopian sci-fi novel of the same name written by Scott Westerfeld, which led to three more books and a spinoff series titled Impostors.
