Wicked 2’s release date has been changed, moving it away from a worthy contender. The first Wicked is set to release on November 22. Wicked is the first of a two-part adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical and serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, starring Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba), Ariana Grande (Glinda), Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and Peter Dinklage.
According to Variety, the sequel to Wicked has officially moved up its release date. Instead of coming out on November 26, 2025, Wicked 2 will release on November 21, 2025. This will be a debut that’s five days earlier than the release of its main contender, Zootopia 2, the highly anticipated Disney sequel.
Wicked Part 1 Also Changed Release Dates To Avoid Competition From Disney
These Schedule Changes Will Ultimately Benefit The Wicked Movies
This won’t be the first time Universal changed release dates to avoid a head-to-head collision with Disney. In July, the first Wicked changed its schedule to avoid butting heads with Moana 2, a film from a studio that’s no stranger to musicals. While Wicked will still have to face competition from the upcoming Gladiator II, also coming out November 22, 2024, it’s better than facing another musical that’s also a highly anticipated sequel.
The schedule change for Wicked 2 is a promising update, putting the film in a slot that has more opportunity and less competition than its previous release date.
The schedule change for Wicked 2 is a promising update, putting the film in a slot that has more opportunity and less competition than its previous release date. The only other noteworthy movie coming out November 21, 2025 is a biblical-animated film based on the Old Testament’s King David. The move should bode well for Wicked 2, as it gives the movie an opening weekend unburdened by another potential blockbuster.
Opening weekends make or break a film, so changing release dates is standard behavior that usually comes with promising results. However, Wicked 2‘s success is not only dependent on its opening weekend, but also on the success of its predecessor. Thankfully, the first film has better chances with its current release date, possibly foreshadowing a bright future for Wicked 2.
