“The Best Jedi Master That Anyone Could’ve Ever Hoped For”: Hayden Christensen Honors Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi In Touching Tribute

Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Ewan McGregor had his Hollywood Walk of Fame Ceremony today, and Hayden Christensen’s tribute perfectly honored their incredible bond in Star Wars. Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker are two of Star Wars’ best characters, and a huge part of their beloved status in the franchise is due to McGregor and Christensen’s performances. Although Obi-Wan and Anakin had already been characters in the original trilogy, Christensen and McGregor brought something brand-new to the characters, and that legacy lives on in Star Wars movies and TV shows to this day.

During his tribute at the Hollywood Walk of Fame Ceremony, Hayden Christensen beautifully captured how special the relationship is not only between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi but also between Christensen and Ewan McGregor himself. In the video, posted by walkoffame on YouTube, Christensen describes McGregor as “one of our great actors” and “the coolest person on the planet” and recalls McGregor’s “disarmingly warm embrace” the very first time the actors met. In fact, the love and humor infused in Christensen’s speech made it clear that the pair truly are friends.

Specifically, Christensen joked about the tragic on-screen encounter between Obi-Wan and Anakin in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, referring to McGregor as “A friend who would later go on to chop off both my legs and leave me for dead on the side of a volcano.” Christensen touchingly ended the tribute by saying, “My friend Ewan, I want to thank you for being the best Jedi Master that anyone could’ve ever hoped for.” McGregor and Christensen then both expressed love for one another, with Christensen saying, “I love you, brother.”

What Hayden Christensen & Ewan McGregor’s Friendship Has Meant For Star Wars

It’s difficult to imagine what Star Wars would look like without Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen. Although both were introduced in the prequel trilogy, and Star Wars was already incredibly popular before they joined the franchise, they have both had a massive impact on Star Wars to the present day. In fact, while there was mixed reception of the prequel trilogy initially, to say the least, they are now largely seen as some of Star Wars’ best movies.

In part, that has undoubtedly been because of McGregor and Christensen’s wonderful chemistry on-screen. It is abundantly clear not only in the prequel trilogy but also in their scenes in the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show that the two share a special bond, and it makes the love between Obi-Wan and Anakin (however complicated and eventually tragic) feel genuine. Moreover, while each actor had major shoes to fill in their respective roles, McGregor and Christensen have both come to define their characters.

Ewan McGregor & Hayden Christensen Are Truly Brothers

As a massive fan of the prequel movies, it is also truly a joy to know that there is a sincere brotherhood between Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen, as that isn’t always the case. Characters can have a powerful bond on screen that doesn’t translate to the actors in real life, and that’s understandable. However, knowing that McGregor and Christensen really do love one another as brothers makes their on-screen relationship even more profound.

It’s also exciting to hear both McGregor and Christensen reference a possible return for Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, be it in a potential Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 or otherwise. While that remains speculative, I for one would be positively delighted to see McGregor (and Christensen) return to the Star Wars screen again. Whether those returns are coming down the line or not, though, Hayden Christensen’s speech honoring Ewan McGregor’s role as Obi-Wan Kenobi really was the perfect reminder of all this iconic duo has brought to Star Wars.
