The long-awaited Community movie gets a positive new filming and tax credit update. First airing on NBC in 2009, the Dan Harmon-created sitcom concluded its six-season run in 2015, with audience interest remaining high in seeing a movie come to life. A Community movie is now confirmed to be happening at Peacock with Harmon penning the script and original cast members Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudy, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Donald Glover all returning. The project has faced numerous delays since its announcement, however.
Now, a new report from TheWrap reveals that the Community movie is set to film in the state of California, with expenditures set at $16.3 million. The production will ultimately get back $3.3 million of this as part of the state’s tax credit program. It should be noted that $16.3 million is not necessarily the amount of the film’s final budget.
When Will It Start Filming?
The Community movie was first announced in 2022, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing for the long-awaited film. Harmon was hard at work on the script, but the onset of the WGA strike last May paused work until September 2023. With Harmon now back at work on the script, there have been numerous reports about when the project could start filming, with the schedules of Community cast members like McHale, Glover, Brie, and others evidently a challenge to align.
While it’s still not known when exactly the Community movie will start shooting, the latest update is proof that things are still happening behind the scenes. Various updates from McHale, Brown, and Jim Rash over the last year have suggested that filming will occur in 2025, though all have also sounded somewhat unsure. If filming doesn’t start until next year then promotional materials for the Community movie are still a long ways away.
Pierce Hawthorne actor Chevy Chase will not be returning for the Community movie after he left the show before season 5.
The Show Was A Cult Classic
The full budget for the Community movie hasn’t yet been revealed, but it’s probably not significantly more than the $16.3 million mentioned in the report. The show famously struggled with ratings from its earliest seasons, and spending a great amount on a movie for a struggling show doesn’t make a lot of financial sense.
That being said, Community, despite its struggling ratings, is a beloved show and one that fared well with critics throughout most of its run. It’s been almost 10 years since the finale, and it’s a testament to the audience passion for the show that a movie is happening at all. With filming plans evidently now in place in the state of California, more concrete updates regarding the Community movie will hopefully be arriving over the next few months.
