Sigourney Weaver reveals whether there are plans for her to return to the Ghostbusters franchise. Weaver played cellist Dana Barrett in the beloved 1984 film and reprised the role for Ghostbusters II. Decades later, Weaver played Dana again in Ghostbusters: Afterlife‘s post-credits scene, but was not part of the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire cast, even though the 2024 sequel featured original franchise stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson.
While speaking with Deadline about receiving the Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement Award and reflecting on her career, Weaver was asked whether she will return to the Ghostbusters franchise. She responded, “Not that I’m aware of,” confirming that there currently are no plans for her to play Dana. The franchise’s overall future remains uncertain as a Frozen Empire sequel remains unconfirmed.
2 Other Franchises Are Keeping Sigourney Weaver Busy For Now
Sigourney Weaver Continues To Be The Queen Of Science-Fiction
While Weaver’s brief Ghostbusters: Afterlife return may be the final time she plays Dana, Weaver is currently busy with roles in the Avatar and Star Wars franchises. Weaver played Dr. Grace Augustine in the first Avatar film, and despite the character’s death, she returned in the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, as Kiri, the biological daughter of Dr. Augustine’s avatar body, who is adopted by Jake and Neytiri. She also played Dr. Augustine during a video recording and a vision scene in The Way of Water.
The Alien franchise is behind Weaver, and Ghostbusters may be as well, but she is integral to the future of both Avatar and Star Wars.
Weaver has confirmed her involvement in Avatar: Fire and Ash, and in Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, with the sequels likely building on Kiri’s unique connection to the world of Pandora. Meanwhile, Weaver has also confirmed her involvement in The Mandalorian and Grogu, whose 2026 debut is slated to be the first Star Wars film released in theaters since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Her role is still being kept under wraps, as are most details about the film.
Jon Favreau is directing The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Between these two science-fiction franchises, Weaver will continue to star in several upcoming blockbusters, regardless of her Ghostbusters future. This is fitting for the actor who played the iconic Ellen Ripley in Alien, which launched its own long-running science-fiction franchise, with Weaver starring in several installments. The Alien franchise is behind Weaver, and Ghostbusters may be as well, but she is integral to the future of both Avatar and Star Wars. Although, if Weaver were to return to Ghostbusters, it would be welcomed by viewers after her brief Afterlife cameo.
