Night Shyamalan, follows a suburban father and secret serial killer named Cooper Adams (Josh Hartnett) who attends a concert performed by Lady Raven (Saleka Night Shyamalan, who wrote the music she performs onscreen) with his daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) that turns out to be a sting operation designed to catch him. The Trap release has so far been a modest commercial success, earning a box office total of roughly $64 million worldwide and counting against a budget of $30 million.

The Sequel Is Still Up In The Air
So far, it remains to be seen if the M. Night Shyamalan thriller receives a sequel. Both Shyamalan and Trap star Josh Hartnett have expressed interest in returning for another movie should the opportunity arise. The director has also set a precedent for not being averse to returning to franchises. While the majority of his directorial efforts have been standalone movies, he wrote and directed the unlikely trilogy that formed when it was revealed that 2016’s Split was connected to 2000’s Unbreakable, with the storylines of both movies culminating in 2019’s Glass.
The only other franchise movie directed by Shyamalan is 2010’s The Last Airbender, a live-action adaptation of the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
However, while the Trap ending leaves the door open for another installment, the movie’s performance in theaters likely has not given producers confidence to greenlight a follow-up. Typically a movie needs to earn between two and two-and-a-half times its budget in order to earn a profit, which means that the movie’s break-even point is likely somewhere between $60 and $75 million. While it could very well have already hit that point, it may not have earned enough in theaters to have earned a sequel.
However, if Trap performs well on PVOD and physical media, this could boost the movie’s overall profits substantially, pushing it over that line and earning it a proper follow-up, even if the sequel’s budget might still need to be reined in somewhat. This success is entirely possible, given the way that the special features dig even further into the movie’s unique central setting, which is the fictional concert put together by real-life pop artist Saleka, who is also M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter.
